BLACKPINK: A Career In Song Ratings

There are a number of acts who have debuted in the past few decades and have dozens of song ratings on this blog. I thought it would be fun to lay these ratings out in chronological order, line-graph style, and take a macro view of their careers so far. Then, similar to my “Underrated K-pop” features, I can average their ratings into one mega-score and place them in a pantheon alongside other acts.

As always, this feature has some rules of its own. I’m including any “Song Review” ratings as part of this graph, including Japanese releases and collaborations with one other artist. I’m not including Buried Treasures or solo/sub-unit releases. For the ratings themselves, I’m using the most current number on this blog, so if a song was part of a “Risers and Fallers” or “Legendary Songs Inauguration” post, that’s the rating you’ll see displayed here. That means there will still be a few ratings here and there I find slightly inaccurate, but it’ll mostly reflect my up-to-date feelings.

Finally, these scores are completely subjective. Feel free to agree, disagree and argue (that’s part of the fun!), but know that this chart reflects the opinion of only one person (me).

  1. PWF and AIIYL are peak Blackpink, and it sucks they never went to that sound since then (Ice Cream was a cute sound but it was too juvenile and just godawful). Lovesick Girls comes a close third in their discography ranking and the rest are just fine to duds

  2. PWF and AIIYL are the only songs from Blackpink that I actually enjoy (albiet i enjoy those two A LOT). if im not mistaken, weren’t those 2 songs meant for 2ne1?

  4. This is fair. BP never had very many really great songs. The strength of BP was always the personalities of the women and their kickass live show. ☺️☺️

  5. This just made me realise how tiny their discography actually is and also how it was never about their music.

Lovesick girls is my favourite from them.

  6. Wow, I didn’t realize Whistle had a lowish rating on this blog! That’s a top BLACKPINK song for me.

As if it’s Your Last is a tough one. I really love that song, and it’s one of the first Kpop songs I learned to karaoke. But there’s just so much reverb on it, it makes it hard to listen to. I wish they’d release a less echo-y version.

  7. Weird, I didn’t realize I was the biggest blink who reads this blog. I only got into k-pop a few years ago and, to be honest, Lovesick Girls was the first song where I was like “wow, some of this music might actually be pretty good!” So I’ll always have a soft spot for Blackpink in my heart. I’d put DDDD and Whistle somewhat higher as well.

On the flip side, Ice Cream is overrated at 7.25 and I don’t even remember Ready for Love.

Still–especially when excellent B-sides like Forever Young and Don’t Know What To Do are included–I think they have a thin but solid discography, not up there with f(x) or GFriend but certainly respectable.
