Here’s the thing about Cortis: I really want to like their music. I think REDRED is genuinely fantastic and what I’ve seen of the members filling in for host duties on weekly music shows has been very charming. I like the idea of young creators coming in to offer something a bit different than the norm. However, I just don’t think the music has been good so far. It tends to be either mind-numbingly obnoxious or a big, boring nothingburger. I think I prefer the former to the latter (even though my ratings don’t always reflect that), but neither is a great space to be.
Blue Lips fits squarely into the “big, boring nothingburger” territory — though I’d strike the “big” from that description. It’s a short song, it’s an atmospheric song, and it’s ultimately a song that goes nowhere. If you enjoy the sounds of artists mumble-singing over muted keys meant to evoke the idea of a “serious artistic statement”, you’ll probably take a liking to this. But without any real songcraft or variety, this barely feels like a song at all. It’s an extended interlude at best, consisting of about one idea. The melodies — such as they are — are flat and repetitive and the track dissipates before it even gets going. If Big Hit didn’t insist on promoting these songs with music videos I probably wouldn’t have written about this at all. After all, there’s barely enough content in Blue Lips to cover!

The production lowkey sounds like something some kid at school would have created on those Yamaha keyboards for the morning assemblies or a function 😭
But yeah, it’s boring. Man, I could have done something more productive and interesting with those 2 minutes, like procrastinate for my finals and doomscroll on twitter dot com.
Anyways, 5 (4, 6, 5, 5) for me. And I hope we get an MV for YCC, but mostly cause I’d sell my kidney to see the review :9

I’m also hoping for a YCC mv for the same reason 😂

If not then Nick can always consider the Treasure That Should Remain Buried idea from the Lemonade review and highlight that song 😀 (Nick, please consider it, I’ll name my future pet after you)

I’ve never listened to the album so this is my first time listening to it and nothingburger is correct. I like the members but the music is just bottom of the barrel (with the sole exception of REDRED).

thoughts on these “pick me” songs?

I know Nick reviewed Nekkoya, but he didn’t review the original Pick Me, so I too am curious to see if his thoughts have changed on Nekkoya since his initial review, and what his thoughts were on the first ever Pick Me theme song.

He talked about the original Pick Me in the Top 50 songs of 2016. He didn’t like it at first, but it became a huge grower for him.

TNT and Wassup are the only songs I like in this album. You didn’t like TNT though so I don’t think you’ll like Wassup? I personally didn’t like RedRed but I can admit it’s somewhat a catchy song. The other songs are just atrocious.

U’re right. Its too obvious who is Hybe new golden child right now. Just how many music videos they made for them so far versus how much they allocate for other groups? Txt only got 1 this comeback.
They keep shoving their suck ass music to people and people with no music taste eat it thinking it was good.

they are doing the NewJeans visual album approach that brought the group so much success.
TXT’s debut EP all had music videos (even though Our Summer was just a self-filmed video), and they used to release short films during the first three(?) years of their career. I think at this point in their careers they’ve moved past that since those take so much time to film, and they have busy schedules. though I have noticed that their team has been fucking up minor stuff (nothing egregious so far), so there’s definitely some truth to that “no longer the favorite child” thing.

But with Cortis didnt they already got like 12 music videos from only 2EP? The bias is too obvious. Not only that they promoted their recent ep overlapping so many seniors and promoted it way longer than their seniors too. This recent comeback cycle packing so many Hybe groups promoting so close with their labelmates, while the golden childen overlapping them and promoting longer than them is such a MESS.

I guess, but I didn’t count the performance videos or whatever HYBE called them.
that’s just the reality now unfortunately, older groups go on music shows for about 2 weeks. HYBE is letting CORTIS promote almost all the songs on the EP and they’re still rookies.

There are a lot of good songs written by teenagers. This is not one of them.

Cortis stans will call this a beautiful and deep piece of art that only cortis can bring to the industry
I’m sorry, i just don’t think repeating “my blue lips” over and over in between mumbled and pitched up verses is beautiful, deep, or artistic. Maybe I’m missing something 😂

What to expect from them? This is the same fandom tht got Awed by their faves ‘ability to autotune’. Can u brain that?

I liked Lullaby from their first EP way more as an obligatory “filler” track because it at least had some interesting things going on with the production and chords, even if those things were all kind of in the background. This track has pretty much zero to offer because none of the vocals here are colorful enough to stand out in any way.

3 (2,6,2,2). Joji’s Piss In The Wind was one of his weakest albums. Why would you want to recreate that?
