Consistent artist/producer pairings are not nearly as common as they used to be in K-pop, but fans are so used to see ONF and composer Hwang Hyun work together that there was mass outrage when last November’s mini album didn’t feature him at all. But now that the group has moved to a new agency, they’re back with their usual team to finally deliver part two of the full album they began in early 2025.
As ecstatic as I am to have Hwang Hyun back in the fold, this also sets up lofty expectations. This is the guy that’s given us classics like Complete, Beautiful Beautiful and New World, after all! I expect the impossible from him because I know he can do it, so it’s a bit disappointing that Open The Door settles for being a solid — but very safe — rock track. Rock has had a moment in K-pop this year, so I’m not surprised ONF would journey down this route, but for such an important comeback I had hoped for a real throwing down of the gauntlet.
Instead, Open The Door is a very pleasant mid-tempo with a strong chorus. I’m not one hundred percent sold on the “open the door” hook, but the first half of the chorus has a welcome sense of drama. Even better is the song’s ornate bridge, which pulses with the kind of out-of-the-box arrangement I expect from ONF and Hwang Hyun. Still, stacked against the group’s many triumphs Open The Door is relentlessly “nice.” And in this K-pop economy, I’m yearning for much more than “nice.”

This feels like a pretty basic rock track, but with ONF’s (and Hwang Hyun’s) signature sound mixed in. Very pretty! A nice addition to their discography. But I was also hoping for something more classically uptempo from them.

As I am hearing it with low expectation, this track is actually quite ‘nice’. The intro is a bit unique and the vocals really delivers. The bridge and the later chorus part are the highlight of the song and it was a ‘nice’ listening experience. However, the rock elements came quite late into the song and they could up the tempo to make it more energetic. A good nod to the classic nevertheless.

I disagree with 90% of your review🙃. I think this song is practically perfect, from beginning to end. Love at first listen and it only gets better when you blast it in the car. Similar to Bye My Monster, as soon as it started playing I stopped what I was doing just to listen carefully to what they were offering. Love the instrumentals, the vocals, the structure, the length, and even the lyrics make sense. What I love the most is the build up…it takes me somewhere and leaves me with a sense of satisfaction that most Kpop songs don’t reach these days.

PS: I think the team did an great job maturing their sound. They are adults, so it is ok that they go for more mature elements, themes, visuals, etc. Wonderful transition in my opinion. Poppin’’ and BeautifulBeautiful are two of my favorite songs ever, but I like this version of them too. Bye My Monster was awesome, and so is this one.

I had lyrics open by mistake on this song, and I was greeted by a wall of Korean. That brought a smile to my face. Then I scrolled down and saw a bunch of Latin! So my bias is a 10 here just for that 😁
I think the song could be stronger, but I appreciate what they’re going for. 7.75

This doesn’t quite have the dynamicism of Bye My Monster but I did enjoy the build up and crescendo here. I like that ONF have been kind of gradually evolving their style a bit to this wistful, emotional sound but I would definitely like them to stay experimental with it like they are so good at. In Hwang Hyun we trust.
Speaking of, I am begging you Nick to do a full review dive into the album. Save for one filler track that they should’ve just left out, it is SO good and so cohesive (only complaint is the songs are so great I wish they were longer just so I can marinate in their greatness.) Their vocals continue to blow me away. They truly are carrying the torch from SHINee on how to balance emotion, danceable pop songwriting.

Nick, I respectfully have to disagree with you – one of the members (Yuto) confessed that over the past year that he would cry every time he listened to Open the Door’s demo, not knowing if/when he would ever be able to perform he would be able to perform it as a member of ONF. The real 10/10 is in this song finally being able to exist in the world. 💡

I am happy that they have managed to change agencies with the group intact! That does not always happen so smoothly.
As such, this song and its message sounds like their reboot continuation album. Its about the meaning of the song for both the boys and their fans. The head is saying the song as recorded is perhaps mid8’s or so, but the heart is going OMG OMG OMG yes they are still here, which is priceless.
