NouerA haven’t made a comeback since (checks notes… firmly ignores notes) June of 2025, building their sound on dramatic electro arrangements the likes of which we don’t hear much in K-pop anymore. They certainly did not attempt a generic shout-chant hip-hop track produced by Lay “The Sheep” Zhang, for which we can all be grateful. Now, they’ve returned with a slight softening of their signature sound on new single .exe.
To me, .exe feels like how the group’s first two EPs might have sounded if they followed a trendier style of songwriting. The punchy electro touches remain as part of the instrumental, but the percussion feels much more canned and predictable. The same can be said for .exe‘s melody. The chorus is catchy and solid, but if you listen to each melody line closely, they all tend to resolve in the same general place. This gives .exe the flat, repetitive phrasing that’s become so ubiquitous in today’s age of lackadaisical sing-talk. Gone are the thrilling peaks and necessary valleys, replaced with a monotonous middle-ground that keeps the track chugging along but forfeits its chance to grow into anything close to a memorable highlight.
This this in mind, .exe feels more like a b-side you’d hear on NouerA’s first two albums. It lacks the spark and punch of a killer title track, taking a less ambitious route while retaining the group’s overall vibe. Commercially, this might be a decent gamble, but for us early fans who were looking at NouerA as the second coming of second/third-gen boy group bombast, .exe tends to blend in with everyone else at the moment.

Yeah, they certainly did not come back with a song produced by Mr. Lay “I’m the Lit! Brrt brrt I’m China Sheep!” Zhang. Just like how AHOF so did not release a song whose chorus was just “shit-shit-shit sugar high!”.
Anyways, this is cute, I could see it be a b-side in their first two albums, but it leaves a lot to be desired as a title track.
Rating’s the same, I can see it grow on me though.

Despite their last EP being such a disaster, this new EP is actually quite solid. Though I agree that the title track lacked the necessary punch. I enjoyed another song in the album titled WTF(un) more than the the title track, it reminded me more of their first two mini albums.

Yay, hurrah, (deep sigh). I mean, I feel like for me this year is a year of following my favorites from prior years and it is nice to hear Nouera return (mostly) to their form. I’ll take it. low to mid-8’s for me.
WTFun is an excellent B-side and a lot of fun. If you like Nexz “Hypeman” you will like WTFun.

as a full time nova i will say waiting 13 months for a comeback was excruciatingly hard but now that its here im very happy with it! unfortunately its not n.i.n/number of cases caliber but because it was made by the same team who did Warning! and Make You Move (some of my favorite nouera tracks) i can definitely forgive it for sounding more like a bside. the songwriting actually reminds me of stuff i would love back in 2016 so i think they did hit the nostalgia factor pretty well
i reallyyyy hope nouera and e.one unite for the next tt though. this comeback happened pretty quick so it makes sense they’d opt for in house producers/choreographers, but i think their first two releases are what both fans and non-fans associate most with nouera’s overall sound and image. everytime i see posts recommending nugu groups, n.i.n is always the song used in the post when nouera comes up. like every single time. it really makes you wonder why their company thought the concept change was a good idea in the first place
anyway i really hope they get success with this comeback, i love this group to death and they deserve the recognition!
