Like FTIsland and CNBlue before them, DAY6 have settled into an elder statesman position as one of K-pop’s leading idol rock bands. The difference is that most members of DAY6 also sing on their tracks, offering the opportunity for multiple solo careers. Young K made his solo debut back in 2021 but hasn’t released an album since 2023. Today, he’s back with the anthemic Shut The Door.
A song like this is a guaranteed crowd pleaser, at least around these parts. It doesn’t ask much from its listener, letting you sit back and enjoy the rush of adrenaline that comes from a well-written, propulsive rock track. It has a breezy summer energy, bolstered by synth and ever-present, ever-accelerating percussion. This style of song is its own archetype and Shut The Door doesn’t attempt to do any twisting of that format, but sometimes you simply crave a classic approach. If all I want is vanilla ice cream with chocolate syrup, I’d be annoyed if someone handed me a bowl full of extra toppings. Shut The Door is that vanilla ice cream: smooth, satisfying and rather plain.
Because of this, listeners’ enjoyment of Shut The Door will depend entirely on their love for Young K and/or this particular style of song. He gives an admirable performance, deploying wisps of falsetto to give the chorus plenty of movement. The track is probably too restrained to enjoy the longevity of a classic like Time Of Our Life, but in this bummer summer of K-pop I’ll gladly take any song that even attempts dynamic melody and Shut The Door definitely ticks off that box.

On first listen, this seems so good! It’d be a highlight on any Day6 album.

Funny year in which one of my favorite songs is called “Open the Door” by ONF, and now this equally good song called “Shut the Door”. Methinks I will put them back to back on my playlist.
Yep, solid song, solidly done. It is hard to not at least enjoy this song if not like or love it. Very singable, very bounce and swayable. SO many leading men could have done this song, but Young K did, and so good for Young K!
Mid 8 for me.

Semi-related: besides, “Open the door” by ONF, the other search results on US itunes for “Shut the Door” return “Slam the Door” (explicit) by Young Stoner Life, “Leave the door open” by Bruno Mars”, and simply “The Door” by Teddy Swims.
