KARD have taken the unusual approach of announcing their disbandment alongside their new album, giving fans one last victory lap before the race is over. This co-ed group debuted with much fanfare all the way back in late 2016, riding K-pop’s tropical pop wave to great effect during their first few years. Since then, their material has been more of a mixed bag.
Smartly, their final single Back To Life recalls their best work without sounding overly maudlin. As disbandment singles go, this is quite upbeat and celebratory. It ticks off all the boxes you’d expect from a good KARD track, utilizing each member well and building toward a rousing centerpiece. I love the percussion throughout, which gives Back To Life a steady pulse guaranteed to get your head moving. The instrumental post-chorus is also satisfying, adding a spike of interest just where the song needs it.
This aspect I appreciate most about Back To Life is its texture. Abrasive electro production is in trend these days, but this instrumental resounds with more depth and weight. It feels fuller in this way, adding to the song’s emotional appeal. I doubt it will be setting any charts on fire, but as a piece of self-referencing nostalgia this works very well.

It feels like a world cup song. At least KARD opt for a more upbeat approach for their disbandment song, and it’s a great ending for them.
I still remember the first song that I get to know KARD is “You in me”, and ever since that time I’m in love with them, of course, fully biased, though their recent releases are not that great but it’s still able to know their signature sound.

The post-chorus hook seems to really be the highlight/climax of the song yet it ends in like 4 seconds.
On the other hand, “At Least” off the album is one of their best songs…ever. Such a bummer it feels so short.

I’m sad to see this group wrap things up, but happy for whatever the members do next. It’s very much a month late in terms of World Cup celebration vibes, but as I’ve fallen in love with football, I’ll prob fall in love with this too.

this took me back to summer 2017 or 2018 era kpop, which is definitely nostalgic by this point. The melody is just cathartic and uplifting enough to get across the emotion of a simultaneous goodbye but also a victory lap, so on that level this really works for me. Very few groups last 10 years, let alone experimental ones like a co-ed group. They should be proud for coming this far.

I’m hearing Shakira and Zooptopia big set piece, in a good way as I have seen all of them with the kiddos and we have enjoyed them.
