Apart from solo tracks, the members of Girls’ Generation haven’t released new material together since 2022. They’ve worked in sub-units in the past, but not nearly as often as agency peers Super Junior. It’s refreshing, then, to see them debut a new unit nineteen years into their career. HRS consists of members Hyoyeon, Yuri and Sooyoung and they’ve chosen the gimmicky Skibidi as their entry point.
As someone who works with middle school students in my day job, the first thing the title Skibidi makes me think of is “skibidi toilet,” which was a big thing a couple years ago. This Skibidi plays more strongly on scat sounds (not that scat… get your mind out of the gutter) and references several distinct genres. The track blends a stylish strings-assisted house sound with a prolonged hip-hop breakdown. This blending of genres is nothing new for SM Entertainment (or SNSD), but they’d do well to remember that “blending” means actually melding several elements together into something new. Abrupt turns into a completely different sound are not nearly as effective.
Skibidi‘s piecemeal approach is frustrating. Aside from its silly spoken-word hook, I enjoy the club atmosphere developed up until the point the track collapses into its hip-hop segment. The chant-along finale is also fun, if predictable. I’m happy to see an older K-pop group return with something energetic and upbeat instead of dull, adult contemporary fare, but I doubt whether this song will age particularly well.

Could be worse, they could be releasing something like this
But well, leaving the name aside, it’s… okay.
7.25 (7, 8, 7, 7) for me

If they actually did this, I’d genuinely crash out.
Keep brainrot terms faaarrrrrrrr away from K-pop.

i seriously don’t get why they decided to use skibidi out of all words…is it some sort of campy thing

I think it is. I believe this subunit started out as a joke but went kinda viral, so we actually got an release. The videos they release on hyo’s channel are all comedic

Also, I feel it’s important to note that according to the members, this is a “joke subunit” whatever that means? 😭

It was a gag that started on Hyo’s “Fake Kim Hyoyeon” Youtube series where she “learns” how to be a soloist, and then the joke was she was so bad, she needed a subunit. And then Yuri and SY were free… Other celebs appear on “Fake Kim Hyoyeon” by design, so people either wanted in on the joke, or were sincerely like, “Wait, I have a thing you could do a title song for…”
SM didn’t have to lift a finger other than clearing Hyo’s schedule until it got too big to ignore. Super funny, I love this for them.

lol I’m weirdly proud of them for this. I went in ready to hate it (I may be an ancient Sone, but I’m only human, I can only take so much at this age), but honestly it’s pretty cute. I love the video, too. This is honestly so much lift for a joke that started online that I’m proud of them for riding it to its logical conclusion.
Don’t think “Skibidi” is a legendary bop, but the B-side is super charming.

Should have rated it 6.7 for the bit.

as someone whose favorite group of all time is SNSD I was prepared to hate it based off the title alone. but outside of the title and “skibidi” hook I like it. the SMP/Yoo Youngjin-esque switch for the bridge is my favorite part
I prefer the b-side Lowkey In Love tho, very 1st gen.

I was definitely telling myself it’s a gag single so it was fine to not be utterly charmed, but I’ve probably watched the video about 3x so far. “I. Will. Donce.” makes me laugh every single time.

It’s like I Got A Boy but make it house. It’s fine.

I think the structure reminds me more of next level by aespa, rather than IGAB

Fair. Maybe it’s the IGAB coming full circle after going through aespa.

I love snsd so I am insanely biased, especially since I’ve been wanting this sub unit for years. There’s a part of me that’s disappointed that skibidi is what we got as a title track, but it’s clear to me that they’re poking fun at 5th Gen trends. The actual track is fun and is actually elevated by the ladies’ performance. I definitely prefer lowkey in love, but I’m thankful for any amount of sooyoung (my bias) and snsd I can get.
if I had to give it a numerical rating…. somewhere in the 8’s, I want to be mindful of the impact the sheer joy of this being real has on me right now

They really do perform the song with such ease.

I hate that I love this song 😭 The switch up in the middle was a little unnecessary; I would’ve preferred a proper bridge, but oh well. It was very Hyo, which makes me extremely biased because I love her, but that also means I’m not sure about the longevity of the track. 8/10 for me at the moment 🙂

was expecting a disaster for the ages, but the song moreso reminds me of this silly novelty song from less than a decade ago

I am usually happy to hear any new tracks from SNSD (subunit or not), but I think I will just treat this as a gag song and keep it in the darkest corner of my mind.

i’ve sought this song out to listen to it three times today, so safe to say i like it. these three have the pedigree and goodwill to pull something like this off and i’m open to more of it (PLEASE, sm!!). it’s good weird, which is right up my alley.

This is such a bright ray of sunshine and FUN in the middle of all the beige pop, with the memes of the youth (😂) in both lyrics and choreo. This is how you do a meme song! I can only give it a 10 because it is just so feel good, this is the Mamma Mia movie of K-pop.
I will give it a 6.7 though because it is what fits.

This joke/gag song being better than a good portion of songs meant to be taken seriously AND of decent length is the biggest gag of all and certainly the most ironic lol

Aespa is one of my favorite bands but they have a terrible influence on recent kpop tracks

If what the conversation between Hyorisoo and Chris Lee of SM is any indication of what A&R teams for K-pop teams are currently thinking, then K-pop may be cooked.

I don’t like it as much as I like Lowkey in Love or A Night When Stars Pour Down, but this is not as bad as I was afraid of.

As another commenter said, truly ironic when a joke/gag song is both better and longer than half of “serious” songs these days. Rating is about the same, just reaches an 8 because I have to give SNSD a 10 for bias, always.
