During ILLIT’s debut year, I would never have thought they’d transform their sound into novelty techno, but their 2026 has taken a sharp turn toward the ridiculous and irreverent with music that’s fun but often sounds more like a meme than a song. This continues with new single You’re Under Arrest (체포하겠어), which bolsters its thumping dance beat with a cacophony of high-pitched whistles and equally piercing vocal mixing.
On one hand, I love that the song leans into Orange Caramel style absurdity. K-pop can always do with more lighthearted fun, especially when that’s tied to a high-energy instrumental. During Arrest‘s best moments, the track recalls melodic bangers of the past. ILLIT are a great conduit for this material, bringing a deadpan delivery that keeps things from going off the rails.
However, we’ve got to address the not-so-silent elephant in the room here. The ear-piercing whistling is the song’s gimmick, but for listeners like me who are sensitive to higher pitches (there’s a reason I don’t love trap percussion), this insistent whistling feels like torture to my ear. Why would you ruin a perfectly fine dance track by pumping in the most obnoxious noise you can think of and framing your entire hook around it? It takes an absolutely killer track to overcome this hurdle, and the fact that You’re Under Arrest would simply be “good” without its gimmick ruins its chances of overcoming the annoyance. It’s frustrating, because I feel like ILLIT are so close to capturing something truly exciting with their music, but the HYBE machine insists on sabotaging their songs in one way or another.

I would not wish being arrested by ILLIT on even my worst enemies, cause imagine they make you wear headphones and blast this song on full volume for hours in hopes to force a confession out of you 😩
6.75 (8, 6, 6, 7) for me

That mixing is a mess…
Did they use a Samsung fridge to mix this because it’s genuinely awful😃
I like the song but that stupid ass whistle makes me want to jump out a window 😭

Now that you pointed it out, I do see it. Like they recorded their voices in those speech-mimicking toys which is why it sounds so tinny or buzzy 😭

Yeah, it’s like there’s a high-pitched buzz in the background during those segments…

Up to two years ago, debuting under HYBE was a godsend, fast forward to this year, I think Jeemin and Sangwon not debuting under HYBE is a godsend. Iykyk.
Anyways, I think I’m going to get my popcorn ready for when you grade HYBE in November. Because I can sense a horribly long rant.
As for this song? 7(8,6,7,7) for me.

Sorry if I unintentionally diss TWS, Nick.
But seriously, I need to know what the heck is happening behind the walls of the HYBE building because I can’t for the life of me understand what their producers are doing to their artists.

I feel like most of The Good will focus on TWS cause atp, they’re prolly the only HYBE group still making bangers. Maybe he’d mention &TEAM, TXT and Santos Bravos too. And maybe how CORTIS finally have one redeeming quality about themselves with REDRED.
And The Bad will prolly be a full-blown Nicki Minaj or Ronnie Radke-esque crashout on HYBE’s ragebaiting tactics with their music or how they make wallpaper music and their unfortunate impact on the industry. If not a crashout, at least a sassy snarky review à la his ending line in his Boompala review

There is something deliciously retro in the melody and absurdity. The chorus is like a Japanese anime op combined with North Korea core traditional music. Now for the whistling elephant, I think it works for 2 minutes as a novelty track, but past that I just wanted it to stop. It’s a shame because there are some nice instrumental moments in this song. But they always need a gimmick, and that one gimmick is pure overkill.

first ILLIT song I like since Magnetic lmao, but that whistle is grating as hell

The song would be nice but the whistles make it simply unlistenable. I had to turn it off. I cannot with shrill noises. They make my teeth hurt.
Any chance Belift pulls a Meovv Ddi Ro Ri and removes the annoying part?

I personally liked the song, I feel like the whistle adds onto the good qualities for me because it makes the song recognizable, though I do feel like the song could use a post chorus where were just listening to the instrumental for a moment other than that I don’t really have any complaints. Looking forward to seeing you rate other songs on the EP, specifically More and pop!

The whole verse is unlistenable.

now I wonder, what would the rating be if the song didn’t have the whistles?

I think the whistles add to it honestly and go so far it wraps around into kinda being part of the furniture after a while which is when the long whistle gets you. It’s a song i could see growing on people once the gimmick wears off and the whistles are just another piece of the production. Also can I just say in coming out of a summer that seemed to think songs that made you have an opinion one way or the other was a thing of the past how great it is to be getting some meaty songs that actually intend to stick with you? Barest of minimums but damn is it fun to actually care about new kpop songs again?

Analysis: This track carries a dreamy and simple atmosphere reminiscent of Taylor Swift (and I certainly don’t say that with any negativity toward ILLIT or Taylor Swift—it simply feels a little bland at times). There is a consistent, simple chug in the instrumental that isn’t awful by any means, but it doesn’t offer much in terms of dynamic shifts. Still, it provides a gentle, easy-going listen!

2. More
Analysis: Here, ILLIT tackles a sound similar to a person on runaway featuring some nice vocal layering over a crisp house beat. However, the repetitive “More!” vocal sample stalls the momentum slightly. That said, I found this quite enjoyable compared to some of their past releases. There is also a good helping of sing-talk throughout that doesn’t work as effectively as it could. I’m not sure if a collaboration between LDN NOISE and HYBE would ever happen, but I really feel like they could have helped elevate this type of production to the next level!
8.25 ( 8, 8, 8, 9)
3. You’re Under Arrest
Analysis: This track feels like it could belong in a theatrical trot musical! The underlying beat isn’t bad at all, but that recurring whistle sound becomes a bit distracting quickly and ends up feeling a little out of place as the track progresses. It feels as though they were trying to fully commit to a “cop” concept, but got a bit lost in prioritizing style over substance. The bridge also felt like a missed opportunity; it played things far too safe instead of going all-out with rich melodies and soaring vocal layering.

4. Pop
Analysis: This comes across as a TikTok-friendly take on a classic Lovelyz track, carrying a chirping synth feel similar to PinkPantheress’s “Boy’s a Liar Pt. 2,” along with a subtle touch of brass. Much like “You’re Under Arrest,” they needed to fully commit to the sound here, but not just on a conceptual level. Sadly, the track fell a bit flat. ILLIT’s music sometimes feels like a mouse running on a exercise wheel—the mouse keeps spinning, thinking it’s getting closer and closer to the cheese in the middle, but never quite reaches it.

Final Thoughts
I’ve been making a conscious effort to listen to groups I haven’t paid as much attention to in the past, so I was genuinely curious to see what ILLIT would bring with this comeback. Honestly, I’m leaving this project feeling pretty unsatisfied, with “More” standing out as the slight highlight thanks to its sturdy house beat. While “You’re Under Arrest” is a step up from tracks like “It’s Me,” their discography still hasn’t quite clicked for me yet, as I really need to hear them lean into more endearing, fully realized melodies.
Even so, I am always thankful for the hard work these artists put into their craft!

Using whistle as song gimmick was actually pretty fun and unique idea if they could utilized it properly. The production was quite atypical for korean project that it reminded me of japanese kawaii cartoon tune instead. I also thought that the whole whistle gimmick was being abused & overused so much that it crossed into annoying category instead. It is a classic case of “excess of anything is bad”. It is quite a shame as other B-sides such as More and Pop were not bad at all.

the melody is so good. i hope someone on youtube release a fanmade version with another instrumental because my ears will bleed from all that whistling. *moka dodged a bullet here*

Maybe if they used a real whistle, like anything Brazilian does. Here, the whistle sample sounds like the fire alarm at any Holiday Inn, going off at 3am and you think good god what room is smoking what at this time of the morning. That, but actually with a lot more swearing.
Especially when the whistle is sustained for several measures, yeesh.
Pass.

I hear The bad Touch by the Bloodhound Gang a lot in the bass melody. song where it works much better than here to me. in the chorus it doesn’t match the the girl’s voices and destroy the energy of it for me. would have maybe worked with added layers to make it bigegr.

Damn girl group releases have gotten a lukewarm reception on the blog. The highest rated non-A2O song on this blog is IVE’s Looks Can Kill and Triple S Andless at a rating of 8. That is rough compared to BG releases.
About this song, lots of whistles. Not really sure what to think of it. Kpopalypse said whistles in K-pop songs are bad. Illit said how about whistles throughout the whole song. Hahaha.
