Song Review: Jisoo (BLACKPINK) – Addicted

Following their February comeback, BLACKPINK’s members have been busy with solo work this year. Jisoo pre-released her track Click in early September and is back with new song Addicted today. Presumably, this is all leading to a more substantial project, though judging by the two songs we’ve heard so far it’s difficult to predict just how that project might sound.

Click sanded down all of its edges, resulting in an airy, empty style. Addicted brings much more personality to the table, repainting Jisoo with more swag than expected. But while the song has its moments, the producers seemingly forgot to finish its chorus. It’s a strange sensation, really — almost like you’re listening to two separate songs of opposing bitrates. The verses are relatively full and driving, offering the kind of dancefloor drama Jisoo should be leaning into. There’s nothing unique or special about these segments, but they carry a certain level of tension that builds curiosity.

From here, Addicted completely craters. Not only are we left with a threadbare, repetitive hook that’s more speaking than singing, but the instrumental becomes tinny and small. As stated before, it’s like a segment of the arrangement is literally missing. We go from 320kbps to 64kbps without warning. K-pop fans have heard plenty of anti-drop choruses that kill momentum, but I can’t remember ever hearing one quite like this. The barely-there percussion makes trap music seem full-throated by comparison. It’s a baffling choice, yet doesn’t seem to be in service of any particular statement or idea, which makes the whole thing kind of pointless.

  1. christ almighty that vocal mixing is all over the place in the chorus! did they really compress everything in that part wrongly on their daw?

  2. I liked it. It’s definitely different from her other songs. I would give it a 8. It’s a song that will be my ear worm for 2-3 weeks however,I do agree with the things you have listed in your review.Love what you do even if sometimes I do not agree with them. It helps me base my opinion aswell.

  3. Yeah, I was with the song until the chorus hit. I felt the verses were actually pretty good/building up to something and then it just… fizzles out :/ And then the song also just… ends.

I usually don’t listen to BP/solo tracks but I decided to this time since my brother (annoying Blink) sent it to me, so I guess my verdict of “meh, it’s not bad/ok” is still better than how I feel about the majority of their discography 🤷

  4. It decent imo, The first verse was actually pretty nice to me, but the repetitive part of the chorus was kind of off putting, the 2nd part of the chorus somewhat makes up for it, for me at least. The song also kinda ends abruptly, I was seriously expecting a bridge. Its a 7.5 for me ig. I love Jisoo, but she needs to start picking better singles. If she picked songs like Hugs and Kisses, Tears or Your Love (the 3 b-sides on her EP) I’d be happy 🙂

  5. A perfectly fine song…..until the tongue-splitting chorus happened to drop at least…..and the rap parts was horrendous. Oh God please do not force Jichuu to rap again…..

  6. Basically Flower 2.0, but even worst.

The intro did bring up the vibes and building my expectation, but the drop is so sudden and it instant exhausted me.

  7. Of all the members I don’t get why they didn’t focus on the korean market a bit more with Jisoo, she was their favorite (might sill be?) and to me, she never sound comfortable in english. Always felt like she would have done better by just being more kpop.
as for this song…probably won’t listen to that again

  8. I was thinking I could get behind this but the chorus was legitimately bad. Maybe below average is a better word since it’s not HORRIBLE, but it gets grating after just one listen, and the lyrics are so bland…?

Actually, this is a frequent gripe I have with her discography; most of Jisoo’s songs are love songs, but none of them have evocative or beautiful lyrics the way you’d expect love songs to have. I guess Your Love comes a bit close but not by much. I know they all have different songwriters but it still makes it feel like none of her songs come straight from the heart. It feels like the romantic version of other boy/girl groups’ songs that shout about being unique and rich and famous. Maybe this is a silly complaint, but I had to say it anyway. I don’t expect all artists to come out with love songs that are straight up as touching and heartfelt as, I dunno, La Isla Bonita, but Jisoo’s specifically don’t make me feel even a thing.

Okay, onto the actual song. Straight 6; didn’t care for it at all.

  9. Actually I liked it ..cause she is trying to discover some of her new sides .. it’s good as it was first time she made a song like this .. I actually loved it … 9/10 .. is what I would rate …

  10. If I listened to this blind I wouldn’t guess it’s JISOO. It’s devoid of personality, leaning into basic (and dated) dance pop kind of like Chung Ha hit-or-miss releases. Damned I was really rooting for Jisoo, I expected something more sophisticated.

And the video is really terrible!

  11. Haha what the fuuuuck is this garbage

How does any self-respecting company put out a song like this?

Why doesn’t Jisoo know how to carry a tune yet?

    • If this site was full of professional haters, there would be a whole slew of insults calling out Jisoo’s degraded visuals, horrendous vocals, horrible acting, her brother unrelated domestic abuse allegations, etc.
If you can’t stand this blog, you won’t survive the sh*thole of Twitter and get ragebaited everytime. At the end of day, most of us just don’t like the song and hold nothing personal against her.

  12. That first verse sounded like first verse of Freak the Freak Out from Victorious. Also I really hate this trend of Kpop soloists releasing fully English songs. It makes sense for the other BP members, who speak fluent English, but not so much for Jisoo even if her English has improved. Also I still have no idea who she is as an artist just based on her discography.
