2016 is going to be known as the year of cross-company duets. It feels like SM artists have been collaborating with everybody, and now even smaller agencies are at it. Cherish is a duet between Yuju of girl group GFriend and Sunyoul of boy group Up10tion. Both are known as main vocalists in their respective teams, though this song doesn’t give them much of a chance to display that power.
Like many male/female duets over the past two years, Cherish follows the gold standard set by megahit Some, and employs a light, vaguely r&b beat over which the most inconsequential of melodies floats along. The result is a song that’s impossible to actively dislike, but also does nothing to really grab the listener. Its catchiest (and best) asset is the chorus, which uses a nice melodic loop to add a sense of momentum. This is key, because beyond that, the track keeps an even keel that, as cute as it may be, isn’t all that interesting.
Of course, a song like Cherish was not created to be musically stimulating. It’s like a warm cup of coffee on a cold day. There’s a certain amount of comfort in a breezy track you can enjoy with little engagement. Still, both Gfriend and Up10tion are doing much more interesting things than this on their own, so it’s a bit of a disappointment that this collaboration comes off so basic.
