Most of the time, a kpop group’s title track is the best song on their album. But, sometimes b-sides and album tracks deserve recognition, too. In the singles-oriented world of kpop, I wanted to spotlight some of these buried treasures and give them the props they deserve.
Oh My Girl’s entire Liar Liar mini is a remarkably strong collection of quirky pop songs, and I could have easily featured the brilliant Knock Knock or One Step, Two Steps here as well. But, from the moment I heard I Found Love, I knew I had to mention it on this blog. The chorus hit me instantly, with its glossy stomp and call and response hook. Something about the way the girls’ vocals have been mixed manages to keep intact their chirpy, sugar-rush appeal, but sound oddly soulful at the same time — kind of like a gospel choir on helium.
I’ve always been a big fan of piano-driven pop tracks, but it’s really the soaring, sunny melody that caught my attention. It has the timeless, singalong quality that colors the best of pop music. It’s a euphoric, hands-in-the-air refrain that matches the song’s sentiment to perfection. As much as I love their title track, I think I like this one just a bit more.
