Before a new K-pop album is released, I habitually read its track descriptions (when they’re available). This can be dangerous, as my imagination can falsely extrapolate a single word into the most epic song ever recorded. But more often than not, these descriptions just use the same few trendy descriptors. So when Yuqi’s Bonnie & Clyde was described as “trance-influenced,” all my alarm bells went off. Trance is my personal favorite EDM sub-genre, and I’d love to hear it make a commanding comeback.
Bonnie & Clyde is as much rock as it is trance, but it definitely has that driving, looping energy that makes trance music so satisfying. Like Giant, the song is performed entirely in English. The lyrics are fun and convincing, even if they hinge upon a well-worn concept. But honestly, Yuqi could have been singing total nonsense over this production and I’d still be sold.
I love forward-moving pop music like this. There’s a reason why the word “propulsive” has become a Bias List cliché, after all! From verse to chorus, Bonnie & Clyde knows exactly where it’s going and never makes a diversion. The energy modulates, giving the verses a haunting quality that contrasts with the chorus’s explosive arrangement. But even in its quieter moments, the track maintains its drive. The structure is quite simple, and that’s not a problem. Sometimes simple is best.
However, a song like this demands a compelling vocal. And, Yuqi is more than up for the challenge. She sounds absolutely incredible — especially during the chorus. Admittedly, I’ve never paid much attention to her in the context of (G)I-DLE. But with a track this strong, I’m ready for her to go full-on solo.

First of all, happy birthday Nick!
and Second! I absolutely love this song, I admittedly haven’t paid attention to Yuqi but now I think I am gonna check out for her solo and the next (G)-idle comeback, The production here is flawless, a combination of rock and trance is just what I needed and the fact that this is all tied by that husky voice makes it more exciting.
Rating: 9 or 9.25!

Off Topic: But I am curious in what this EXO single would sound like. I am expecting something which jumps on the template of songs such as Mama and Electric Kiss.
Or..a slinky retro funk song with immaculate vocal layering (basically like Gravity from their 2018 album)

Wow this is amazing, and she achieved that in under 3 minutes. This is better than any of (G)I-DLE’s releases after HANN too…

Y’all, I bias Yuqi for a reason. I haven’t cared for any of IDLE’s material post-Hann, but WOW. This track and album are great.

I find myself to like Yuqi’s two solo songs more than a lot of the group stuff. (G)I-DLE’s releases definitely should highlight her vocals more because this sounds AMAZING.

To me this is not even as good as Giant and far away from G-Idle releases. Trance has been my favorite genre for many years, I’m listening live to Paul van Dyk’s Sunday Session as I write this. I would never think about Bonnie & Clyde as being trance and even trance-influenced is stretching it. It’s a tight, simple, fun song with a looping beat. Nothing special for me but it just goes to show how tastes are subjective.

“Propulsive,” indeed! Simple but catchy. Love that she’s creating her own, distinctive style separate from her group, but it also makes me wish that they’d tackle more stuff like this.
