Song Review: ONEWE – Roommate

ONEWE - RoommateONEUS and ONEWE in the same week?? It almost feels like we’re getting closer to a reunion of both groups, where ONEWE supply a killer track as ONEUS bust out striking choreography. It’s happened before, but I need it to happen for a promoted comeback. Until then, ONEWE are back with special single Roommate (룸메이트).

Though they don’t promote as often as they could, ONEWE have consistently released new music. That’s one of the benefits of being a band – especially one who composes their own material. Roommate is almost entirely self-composed. It’s a beautiful track, shining full focus on the guys’ always-engaging vocals. The arrangement remains quite muted throughout, even as the energy grows. The escalating intensity of the vocal performance mirrors many OST ballads – a tried and true formula that always elicits emotion.

Like these ballads, Roommate brings in strings for added drama. I love the flourish that sweeps us into verse two and wish the song continued to develop that momentum. Instead, Roommate’s knockout moments rely on Yonghoon and Dongmyeong’s vocals. They’re particularly potent when forged together, and the two rally off a few dynamic moments. This power makes up for a faint melody, which doesn’t quite live up to the memorable turns of songs like Reminisce About All and A Book In Memory. Still, Roommate uses hesitance to its advantage, pulling back at the right moments to develop its sense of emotive tension.

  1. Yes, I love their ballads. Yes, they are undoubtedly comforting. Yes, they make me smile. But you’ve already released two ballads before! Why are y’all always so depressed? Release something upbeat finally, guys!🥺

    I’m giving this an 8/10 (7,9,8,8).

  2. unrelated but i wanna talk about kim garam’s scandal and how shocking it is. i wanted to stay neutral at first but with all the overwhelming evidence against her and hybe and somu’s terrible handling of the situation, i just can’t anymore. atp if hybe want to save lesserafim and the other girls, they have to either kick her out or pull some uno reverse card against the ones making the allegations

really reminds me of soojin’s scandal with how poorly she and cube handled it which caused her downfall

    • I personally don’t have any thoughts on Kim Garam at the moment, that stuff will be handled in court. However, like you, I am mad at Hybe’s handling of the scandal. I can’t imagine leaving a ballet career just to be in a scandal-ridden group, or to have a long and successful career in the j-pop industry just to be in this; I’m so sorry to the members of LSFM.

  3. Better than I thought it would be, but that’s coming from someone who’s not big on ballads. But hey, stuff like this grows on me, doughnut did!
