Song Review: BLACKPINK – Pink Venom

BLACKPINK - Pink Venom

It feels momentous every time I write the elusive words “BLACKPINK are back.” They return so infrequently. The last time we had an honest-to-goodness comeback, we were still mired in year one of the Covid pandemic. We didn’t even have a vaccine yet!

Lovesick Girls was a great return to form for the group, hearkening back to the weightier, anthemic hooks found in their earlier work. Since then, fans have made do with a few solo projects and an animated PUBG Mobile tie-in. Pink Venom acts as a taster for their upcoming album. Its title evokes the supposed duality of their sound, but feels like a direct sequel to earlier drop-style hits like How You Like That and Kill This Love.

Yes, this is… a BLACKPINK song. It may be the BLACKPINKIEST song of them all, and your reaction will depend on how you feel about their (very predictable) schtick. To Pink Venom’s credit, it boasts a few moments that are quite weird. Traditional instrumentation opens the track and carries most of the way through until we drop into a second verse that sounds like a bizarre mix of 90’s gangsta rap and hyperpop. The song is at its best when it throws all these ideas into the mix, catching the listener off guard while the ladies act as charismatic tour guides across their own multiverse of madness.

But, Pink Venom quickly loses me. As usual, I was with it until the chorus. Yet again, the song plays the BLACKPINK catchphrasey formula to the hilt. After Lovesick Girls’ rush of a melodic refrain, Pink Venom’s repetitive hook feels severely underwhelming. Worse yet, the track climaxes in yet another “Gra Ta Ta Ta” fest. Come on, producers! You must have more ideas than this, right?? BLACKPINK do what they can with the material, but it’s a losing battle. And really, it doesn’t matter. For some inexplicable reason, K-pop fandom has decided to treat each BLACKPINK release as The Most Important Thing Ever, despite being fooled over and over again by the same cheap parlor tricks.

  1. At this point the Blackpink reviews write themselves 🥴 getting kinda hard to come up with something new to say, though I guess I’ll offer that the chorus is their new worst ever, like what I’d think of as a joke for how lazy a Teddy BP chorus could get, but its real! And theres the ratatatata onomatopoeia in the standard outro, because of course!

Anyways, I would say “lets hope for a AIIYL or PWF or Lovesick Girls for their title track” but I think we all know its best not to have any expectations for a BP song at this point. Sorry girls 😓 wonder if they’re just as frustrated as we are getting the same songs over and over again.

  2. Anyone felt if the Lisa rap was expanded into a full 90s hip-hop song for her solo debut, we would have had something awesome instead of her ad-libbing “Lalisa” and “Money” for the whole song?

  5. The opening verses were actually pretty good but I was bracing myself for a bad chorus the whole time. Then the chorus happened and it was unsurprisingly disappointing and surprisingly bad at the same time. It’s amazing how the songwriting consistently shoots itself in the foot. The girls and the blinks deserve better :/

  6. I really liked the Lisa and Jennie half and the rest was just kind of fine. I don’t like the hook and the final part shouldn’t be there. They really need a new producer. I give it like a 7 or 7.5. Its perfectly fine but its just not anything new from them. Also where did they spend all that money on the video? That did not seem like it should’ve cost them more than any other kpop video.

  7. wow it’s been a minute since i’ve had such a viscerally negative reaction to a segment in a song as i just had to this chorus. “straight to your dome like ah ah ah”??? someone got paid real money to write that!! and then delivering it in the weird bored affect was a…choice. i dunno. not impressed.

at the risk of sounding unkind, i find it to be kind of a bummer that this is the biggest girl group in kpop and thus one of the most common first brushes with kpop for people to have. it’s not that i think the girls themselves don’t deserve the success, i’m happy for them and the way they’ve spun out super successful careers in their own right, but their music has not been good in so long and i can see why someone coming across this would be like, “really? this is y’all’s number one group?”

    • It really is mind boggling. If Blackpink has been criticized for one thing by fans and music critics alike, it’s that they haven’t shown any musical growth since 2018 and keep repeating the same formula for their singles. Nearly every music critic picks out songs like PWF, AAIYL, Whistle, and Lovesick Girls as their best songs. The D4 copies are almost always at the bottom of these lists. It’s just bizarre to keep continuing down this road when it’s impossible to miss the fact that it’s stale and hampering any new sounds from them. And then to make it worse, they have a huge hiatus between songs, so you are left thinking “Is this it? This is the best they could do with 2 years of songwriting time and offers from some of the best producers in the world?” I think ultimately it just shows that YG has no interest in carving out more of a sonic identity for BP (which is why I do think YG will debut a new girl group this winter or spring). They are content with them picking up deals from exposure hype and just giving them enough songs to tour with, quality be damned. I know they are being courted by some Western / international record labels at the moment for after 2023, but whether they stay together as a group or not will be the question. I know at least one member has been offered a pretty lucrative solo career under a major label. And now those factors combined with YG’s sort of apathy towards their group activity and music, it makes me think Born Pink could very well be their last new material as a group (not counting Japanese versions).

  8. Usually I’m a bit of a Blackpink hater, but they really outdid themselves with that song, and especially chorus. That is genuinely unpleasant to listen to. Like, I’m feeling physical discomfort when the chorus hits.

  9. I hate this one. ISN’T IT SO FUCKING HARD TO COME UP WITH SOMETHING DIFFERENT APART FROM THESE NOISY KTL- OR HYLT-LITE COPYCATS????!!!!🤬🤬🤬 Dammit…
    FUCK YOU, YG!!!

As for the group itself, I’m unstanning. I really, really wanted to hear something like Playing with Fire or As If It’s Your Last, but was treated to a shitpiece like that instead. I just can’t stand it anymore. Rating is too high, 5.5 for me at best.

  10. I know that they don’t necessarily bring the best music but at least they had a characteristic sound and that sticky noise that takes away the blame for having their songs on loop for 1 week and that has made their title tracks stand the test of time, but what is this? listening to PV leaves you terribly unsatisfied, neither is it the BP sound you were expecting nor pleasantly surprises you with a solid song that makes you scream “what a great song”. It’s frustrating. Ready for love was a bop compared to this.

  11. The formula has been stale for a few years now, if they want bangers why not get inspiration from Reggaeton? Bad Bunny has been dominating charts for a few years now. Although in all honestly i think this song will be big just because of BP’s star power

    • I don’t think it will be as successful as anyone is anticipating. They will break records again and do well internationally, but I don’t think this will have the longevity of their other songs. I don’t even necessarily think they will top the charts with this in Korea, and if they do, it will be brief. I bet you NewJeans and IVE wind up outperforming them for longevity and listeners. Twice will be a wildcard here with their chart performance hinging on how public friendly the song is.

The current K-Pop industry is a totally different playing field now than it was in June of 2020 when BP released HYLT. And based on the recent releases coming out of YG, not even just BP, it seems like they haven’t fully grasped that fact yet. I don’t think I’ve ever seen so much change in such a short period as there has been throughout the pandemic in K-Pop.

  12. I’m loving how the fans have been hyping the song up mainly the final dance break cuz apparently Lisa said she likes it so ‘naturally’ by fandom logic since she doesn’t say it that much it means the song will be a banger. Instead, we have the most meme-worthy catchphrase yet. I’m in the ghetto RA TA TA TA. It’s the most watered-down version of HYLT in the most Teddy way imaginable.

  14. That chorus is possibly the worst chorus to a song I’ve ever heard. I’m still in shock. It’s a no from me. It’s painful because these girls seem so great and obviously work really hard, but oh my goodness whoever’s writing the songs needs to be fired immediately or Blackpink need to take their business elsewhere.

  15. No, it’s not a good song. But I actually do enjoy the weird affectation of the chorus. I like hearing them play with vocal tone – it’s interesting and new for them, which is more than can be said for the rest.

  16. IDK why I even hope anymore. At this point, I’m not even sure why Blackpink exists bc YG clearly does not care to put a single ounce of effort toward them. With proper comebacks and promotions, they could have overtaken BTS in international popularity by this point. But no group comeback for ages, and group song after group song that devolve into further watered-down versions of each other? YG isn’t even trying to *pretend* to care about them anymore.

    • What’s the point? They had absolutely no reason to give fans any more than they have since they continue to act like sheep and hype up anything that’s given to Blackpink. I think everyone and their mother knows that the girls are making more money in fashion and individual and group endorsements than they are in music. The only comparable aspect would be touring, and again, fans are happy to sell out the arena when it means having to play the same song twice let alone something new (regardless of quality). If anything, BP releases are more of a love letter to those footing the bill for their endorsements and tours. Would I like to see YG take advantage of Blackpink and actually release something that is as innovative as their visuals? Absolutely. But I think by this point they’ve made it clear that BP isn’t going to be that group.

    • Former 2ne1 stan here. YG messed up that group too. Eventually Minzy left, and after one final song the group fell apart. It’s sad because artists under YG are really talented but YG just doesn’t take care of them properly. I love BP- each girl has their own shine, the group has some great songs and their friendship is really sweet. But YG needs to treat their artists better.

Never ending weird lyrics and even naming some sponsored brands it looks like they doing commercial not a real music. There’s a lot of good potential producer out there. And even myself, I believe the girl are tired doing these crappy dance, and the lyrics lmao. Nonsense. They all into beat and repeatable uncatchable phrases. What’s sad is, most fans don’t want backlash and you all see on YouTube comments are praising and admiring the girls– yes they are but atleast they should accept criticism. It’s really eew for me. I’m planning to go to the upcoming world tour but seeing these? Dafuck YG fuck you and your nonsense songs! The girls are talented!

    • Ummm…. liking a group or genre doesn’t mean you have to love every song that falls under them. This site has been a safe place for us to discuss whether we like releases or not. It’s beyond rare that all of the commenters are EVER in complete agreement over a song. Not liking a song is not even remotely the same as “hating” a group. Music is subjective. Instead of being combative, why not just engage in a civil conversation?

  19. Just a terrible soulless song as most of their biggest hits are. I only like Playing With Fire, Lovesick Girls and As If It Was Your Last, when it comes to their big hits. I expected more from their comeback. But the fans will love this anyway x)

  20. I actually think the song is actually really good apart from that utter wet fart chorus, even it’s delivery is utter bum. Maybe if it was sung with more attitude of with more bite maybe I could come around to it but they just repeat the same line twice with no change and expect people to be amazed by it. I’m sure the hordes of YouTube reactors will lap it up like “yaaas queens” but I’m sorry it’s really poor. The final chant at the end sounds like the songwriters just ran out of ideas and gave up. It’s a shame as the raps and verse are really quite good. Hopefully the album release will have a better song to go with it and not this hype baiting, bum whistle sound that has infiltrated so many kpop releases nowadays. And to those saying “I don’t blame the girls” come on, they are the biggest girl group in the industry you really don’t think they have any say whatsoever in the content they put out, you really are naive.

  21. I’m a sucker for a BLACKPINK banger. After all, Boombayah is my gateway to K-Pop.

This is probably their worst title track. It doesn’t bangs the same way their other singles do. There’s something missing here. It’s a shame because the instrumentals are interesting.

P.S. I LOVE How You Like That. It bangs as it should be. Yes, BLACKPINK, BANG!

  22. Ummmmm… it’s an interesting song to say the least. I was pretty happy at the beginning to see Jennie rapping again, because recently Lisa has been doing most of the rapping, and while she is an incredibly talented idol, lets just say her raps aren’t my favorite (and because Jennie is an amazing rapper, honestly). I really enjoyed the pre chorus, and honestly every time rose or jisoo sing a line the song is really good. Not because of them, but the pre chorus and bridge were kinda the only good parts of the song so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯.

But now, the chorus. Ew. I will admit I didn’t mind the sound of it, but they had two years to nail it and all teddy could come up with was taste this pink venom???? I repeat, ew.

And then yeah, whatever the hell was happening with the gratata bit at the end just completely lost me on this song. Again, two years teddy, and you couldn’t even make a third chorus.

I’ll admit I’m not the raging blink I was four years ago, but I was still genuinely looking forward to them finally coming back.

Its fine though, they are popular enough that they don’t have to actually make good music anymore.

    • general Jisoo’s and rose’s part are my favorite sections of a blackpink song. Because they’ll aways be singing and I like their contrasting tones

      Liked by 3 people

      • Ditto. If it wasn’t for Rosé and Jisoo’s duality, I would have checked out of listening to their music LONG ago. And now listening to it is odd for another reason… since my job and social network always takes me to Fashion Weeks or prepping people for award shows, festivals, and things like the Meg Gala, it now means listening to songs and watching the MV of someone(s) I know. K-Pop used to be my escape from that! End tangent. I think the one thing I did appreciate most with this track was Jisoo. It seems like she probably had the smallest part, but this is one of the best she has sounded. Rosé did a good job selling the song with bits of spite and angst in her vocals. But Jennie and Lisa’s raps, especially in the second verse? They felt like they were pulled from an entirely different song and even concept. And so long as they aren’t even writing their own rap lyrics or rhythms, they will always be at a disadvantage to the idols and pop and hip-hop artists who can. And even with that, it’s kind of mind-boggling that they couldn’t even keep the lyrics on theme in those sections.

        Liked by 2 people

        • a big part of rap is aunthencity (honestly, something a lot of K-hip hop clearly doesn’t get) and writing your own verses is part of that. For me it really takes away from the song especially since some of the sentiment isn’t something I think any of them actually know anything about, particularly gun violence

This makes Girls and Sneakers look like Sweetune pieces in comparison. Every aspect of this song and mv was just horribly distasteful. It’s like they took every valid piece of criticism they’ve ever received and made that the entire identity of the song.

  24. YG really took the D4 nickname for Ddu-Du-Ddu-du a bit too literally, huh? No, Teddy, it did not mean we wanted 4 copies of the same song all getting progressively worse. I think YG might be in for a rude awakening this time…. either that or they aren’t counting on Blackpink renewing with them. Because all I am seeing now is a quick dump of new material so they can send them off on the more lucrative aspect of their careers for the agency’s bottom line: international touring (which will take them right to the end of their contract).

I’m placing a wager now that Born Pink will be a 10 track album with 1 additional bonus track (probably Ready for Love) on the physical copy. I’m not a huge Ryan Tedder fan, but we know he worked on this and while I don’t like most of the music in the West he has produced, he did give Twice Cry For Me, which has always been in the top 10% or so of Twice songs for me. I didn’t really like his contribution with Bet You Wanna on The Album, but I know I was in the minority there. I’d also guess 2 featuring and 2 subunit/duet tracks (probably to get fans excited while also needing all the girls’ in the recording studio less and getting breaks for touring).

I’ll be at the VMAs Sunday and am curious to see how this turns out live… with some solid other performers, they will need to pull off another Coachella and not music show recording type stage for it to go over well. We shall see. But any anticipation I felt was killed when I first heard this.

  25. Yeah this is super predictable. I mean you gotta hand it to YG, they have managed to really nail down making Blackpink successful. Obviously, some people, like myself, aren’t swept up in the madness and so seeing the repeat of the same structure isn’t very exciting. I will say I found this catchy and didn’t hate it from the jump like “how you like that”. However, the innovation in the business plan isn’t quite there in the music. I think the second verse instrumentation was nice, but I don’t really feel much about this track. The circumstances surrounding Blackpink make it really hard for me to really invest in them and fully enjoy their music (even the past stuff)

The video had a lot of cool shots. I was rewatching the video more than rewatching the song

    Liked by 3 people

    • It’s a shame they didn’t do more with the video… some kind of story telling, extended intro or outro, or maybe an additional dance break to take better advantage of the sets. There are a ton of great shots and physical sets, but they cycle through them so damn quickly that you can barely even appreciate it. I suppose it’s a good way to get people to watch the MV multiple times, but it still seems like a waste to me. Instead of blowing a huge budget on a just over 3 minute MV, I really think they should have dropped a visual album instead with an MV for each song… because let’s be real, the insane visuals and budget are a huge part of the formula that makes BP successful. Why they don’t play into that more is beyond me. It just reeks of laziness from YG.

      • I heard some mention of a storyline, but I didn’t see anything……
(don’t know if that’s something I should trust blinks on)

I think the reason they don’t do the visual album thing is because being record breakers is kind of a part of the BP brand now. If they actually released a decent amount of music with decent promotion, then the fans would be spreading their attention which would make breaking records harder.

I too thought of YG being incredibly lazy, but I’m convinced that all this stuff we complain out is actually intentional and takes advantage of people who are obsessed with BP

  26. Stan Twitter and Facebook were riding this song’s D so hard that I had to deactivate even though I wasn’t interacting with the tweets/posts. It keeps popping out of nowhere, and them trying to make the lyrics relevant to other artists’ songs (reach? eehh) and edgy for the mass to stream it? Oh god. There’s the part where you can hear Rihanna’s pon de replay and I think they’re “sampling” it and that’s it? My delusion could go further than the line “Look what you made us do” and think it’s their REPutation era when it’s really not. Also those AAVE lyrics weren’t even that cool to be with, is that all they know about the vernacular? Who wrote those?

B.I/Han Bin, you gotta help them get that groove again pleek.

The video was so fast Idk what I was watching, even though I wanted to see Rosie play that guitar more grrrr. The choreography was quite recycled to the point I don’t see it as their signature anymore but just plain boring.

When rookies are trying their best to showcase powerful vocals here and there, bone-breaking choreographies, and entertaining personalities just to level with their seniors, this is what we see from the huge girl group you’re introduced to Kpop? crappy

    • I couldn’t place what it was reminding me of, thank you for pointing it out. I agree the video had a lot of edited cuts and it’s hard to focus on anything. I think it’s intentional just like everything else, you’d have to watch again for details.

    • I guess it’s a “sample” yeah— I mean if not then they’d better have Rihanna’s money.

  28. I feel kinda disappointed because blackpink was what got me into k-pop. Like kill this love and lovesick girls were bangers for me but this in comparison …especially after I’ve discover all these other groups. I feel sorry for the girls as they have so much potential and deserve better. I also feel sorry for all the other groups putting so much effort into the powerful and amazing vocals and rapping, challenging choreo and entertaining personalities in order to even semi catch up with groups that are so famous that even trash will succeed. My sibling is a massive bp stan and they are just trying to defend it to me (they’re all like the bridge was pretty good and I’m like was anything else that good?)
Anyone else think it’s going to be a chart topper just based on all of the blinks so desperate for bp content after 2 years?

    Liked by 6 people

    • This will definitely be topping the charts. It hasn’t even been a day and it’s already at 60M views. YG starves Blinks to give them a sense of elusiveness and very little songs so that blinks can rack up the numbers fast instead of spreading their interest across a bunch of b-sides. The songs are relatively short, catchy, and with a formula that gives them a lot of predictability that’s nice after 2 years of no music. The videos are intensely produced and chopped up and add to the sensory overload of hard-hitting instrumentals. It’s honestly kinda genius, but I feel bad for younger listeners whom might have all this fly over their heads

      • They really should be thinking in terms of songs with good longevity at this point (like LSG) instead of quick chart toppers that tumble down in a few weeks. If IVE releases a song that is anywhere near as successful as Eleven and Love Dive, I think they will bunnyhop over Pink Venom. I could also see Newjeans’ Attention and Hybe Boy climbing back over this as well. Twice will be highly dependent on how public friendly the song is. I think the ground under them is a lot less solid than they anticipated. It’s a very different market now than it was 2 years ago.

        • I would love to see some pressure for change for sure cause I really don’t hate the girls, they can be a great conduit for a banger when allowed to be

  29. The first verse is actually really good IMO but the rest of the song lets it down, especially the chorus.

Love or hate a BP song the chorus usually gives at least a loud burst of energy in some way but the vocals weren’t present and the instrumental felt like they forgot to add elements to it so it just sits in nothingness. Less disappointed and more just completely whelmed by it as a whole.

If the traditional elements had been infused more with the song I think it could have been a winner for me but it’s unfortunate that because this group is so popular everything they do will just sell so the producers can be lazy and uninspired like this and get away with it.

At least it’s just the pre-release single but at this point does it even matter??

  30. Comparing this song to other bp mv songs I gotta say it’s the worst song… can’t listen to it for the 2nd time. I have songs that I don’t like but I can listen to it again but this one No thanks. Reused lines, cringe-y lines and I seriously don’t know where the music will shift next. Rosé’s part is the only parts that is ok for me (except ‘look at what you made us do’). Sorry but did they use all of the budget for the set and outfit?? I don’t want to leave a negative comment but I guess I was expecting too much since YG was boasting about it’s value. Dance great, bp girls voice great, set great but song… no period. I hope the other songs in this album would be better cuz I wished they just saved one song from ‘the album’ and made it into a mv song would’ve been a better pick

  31. The duo rap part was pretty cool ngl. They should do it more often – it had a nice contrast and flow there. Everything else kinda went whoosh over my head though. I really liked LSG so… this was kinda disappointing especially after that.

  33. Well, at least I like this a lot more than How You Like That on first listen. I just hope this is the same situation as “The Album” where they actually chose a great title track (Lovesick Girls). We’ll see next month if that’s the case. Also, I hope there are other gems in the album.

  34. The moment I saw the teasers and heard that backtrack, I immediately thought “this is dddd 3.0”. Frankly, I’m quite tired of this formula, I thought Lovesick Girls would be the end of BP’s singles that sound the same, but I guess I was wrong.
Teddy, please retire, I’m on my knees begging with tears on my face and a runny nose, leave them alone!!!!!1!!1

  35. It looks like everything about Blackpinks production is focused solely on throwing more and more at the video, clothing, marketing etc instead of the music itself. And because they release so rarely it means, sadly, that their fans are so starved for content that they hype up every release as the best thing ever, therefore giving the company profit and a motive to keep going as is. If you really wanted these girls to get better material to work with, not just more expensive videos and outfits, you would stop buying the subpar songs.

  36. The only thought that would not leave my head while I listened to the song is the fact that Blackpink will perform this rap-heavy song during the VMAs where Nicki Minaj will most likely perform a medley of her greatest hits as the recipient of the Vanguard award.

I can already see the Twitter thinkpieces threads about what is “real hip-hop” flooding our timelines as a result.

  37. I’m wondering how the girls feel whenever they get a song like this. “Okay we’ve been gone for almost 2 years and what did we get?” and see the horror on their faces as this musical fart wafts into their noses

  38. Loved that Blackpink chant at the beginning. Hoped it was gonna be their Sticker or Punch in terms of being something experimental and shocking. But it’s…Blackpink. These girls have all the talent to soar and 99% of their songs keep them earthbound.

  39. This is just upsetting by now. I don´t get why they are these famous with the kind of shitty music they are given. Any nugu releasing this song would be the queens of nugudom. I hate how everything is about visuals now and no substance. With 2nd generation with visuals but with vocal talent, performace, dancing talent and good songs…but this is just, lame, plain, shallow. Like in a kardashian world.

  40. Having a look at Koreans, and the above comments, it is safe to say that the song sounds terrible. The feelings toward music are mutual and fans should decide what good music is, not from the marketing of the company. Or the popularity of the group to put anyone down to speak true opinions.
