Song Review: (G)I-DLE – I Do

(G)I-DLE - I Do(G)I-DLE are the latest in a long line of K-pop acts recording English-language material with with the aim of further global expansion. Given the… interesting… nature of this group’s English-language lyrics so far, a full song may not seem like the most exciting prospect. However, paired with influential music company 88rising, (G)I-DLE have leaned into a sound that’s quite different from past material.

I really enjoy I Do‘s blend of sci-fi synth ballad and 50’s girl group doowop. It’s extremely nostalgic, yet not tied heavily to one specific era. This genre mash-up allows for a sense of cinematic grandeur that works well for (G)I-DLE even as it pushes on the edges of their comfort zone. The song is straightforward and simple, slowly unveiling its emotional drama over sweeping strings and soaring melodies.

The vocal mix feels constrained at times, as if the girls’ voices are coming from the bottom of a well. This blunts some of I Do‘s power and makes me wish for a robust harmony or two. But I suppose the stripped down nature of the arrangement adds to the emotional appeal. At just over three minutes, the song is actually longer than most mainstream pop on the charts. Still, it could do with a satisfying climax to its sonic storyline. As it stands, the track simply ends without much fanfare.

(The video’s great, too)

  1. I gotta be honest, that could’ve been silence played for the same length of time and I wouldn’t have noticed. I was into the video. 10/10. I want a cute alien lady to crash into my backyard. The song is actually really good. I like it a lot. I love (G)-Idol. I just wish their name didn’t make me think of Calc 3.

  2. What a great music video. Most times I don’t pay much attention to videos anymore because they tend to not have an overt storyline, but this one was probably my favorite of the year. The song is pretty good as far as English releases from kpop acts go ( I like it better than all the BTS English singles), and it’s the first g idle song in a long time that I feel I will voluntarily listen to again. kinda a bummer it’s with a song outside of their usual sound

  3. I know this song will be overshadowed by Jungkook’s english track Seven. But music wise, I Do is much, much better than Seven by a mile.

  5. It’s been a very long time since Nick honestly liked a Gidle song, must be the retro sound!

I admit, I did not have any expectations for this song as most English tracks from groups are meh, but goddamn did I have the most uncontrolled grin on my face as those synths kicked in! Shamed as I am to admit it, but this might be my favorite Gidle song since Lion, that’s many comebacks ago!

  6. Solid, straight ahead pop song. With a few changes in instrumental, it could be from almost any era, which is a good thing.

As with Hrathen above, I feel like its been a looooong time since I liked any Gidle songs until this one which is pretty good.

  7. It needs a big, Little Mix-style conclusion, but I like this a lot from them. I WISH there was better diction, especially on the word “fault” which just sounds like “fall” in this song.

  8. I usually don’t watch music videos but I’m glad I did watch this one, it’s very well made.

  9. It’s more palatable than their usual releases, which is good since it’ll help (G)I-DLE reach listeners that wasn’t into their Korean music.

I think as a song, it has a sing-able quality. It reminds me of maybe Little Mix, but I know there’s another name that I van think of but I can’t tell who it is lol

  10. Honestly, I really only have one main complaint of the song. I don’t usually call out the vocal delivery of individual members, but Shuhua’s stuck out like a sore thumb here, it feels flat in comparison to the other 5 who took careful care in making certain stylistic choices to really maximise the emotion conveyed. This is speculation on my part, but she sounds a lot more confident singing Korean now compared to before, but her English has yet to catch up. Improvement takes time though, so I’ll patiently wait. With that said, I quite like the song overall. My controversial take would be that I like Queencard more than this song at the moment. Could change though, for sure.

    • You mean other 4, right? There are 5 members currently, which means it would be “Shuhua feels flat compared to the other 4 members.” Honestly, I wish Soojin was still part of the group. I would love to see how she would fit in the song.
