Song Review: Jo Yuri – Taxi

Jo Yuri - TaxiOver the past few weeks, there’s been a ton of K-pop releases embracing bright dance pop sounds. This has been a boon to my playlist, as I tend to flock toward this energy during the summer months. Jo Yuri’s music has shifted style with each release, but Taxi lands her right in the K-pop roller rink alongside many of her peers.

Taxi is pretty generic, but its brisk beat and effervescent vocal performance give it an edge. The chorus pinwheels with a breezy, effusive energy. The melody is repetitive but effective, and would have benefitted from a secondary hook to shoot it to the stratosphere. As is, the bombastic synths carry the brunt of the work, crafting a centerpiece worth waiting for.

Taxi‘s verses are also a ton of fun, employing a call-and-response conversation between sung vocals and chanted replies. The tempo remains high during these segments, ensuring the track never loses its bubbly through-line. This is easily my favorite Jo Yuri track since last year’s Love Shhh, even if I can’t stop myself from hearing SNSD’s immortal Mr. Taxi every time I read the song title!

  1. Clever, poppy, but a bit contrived. To me it is more interesting choices than good choices. The piano bass sample – its all about the piano sample. The vocal forward in the mix, then a drop out bridge. The construction is all by the books. All the seams show between all these sections.
    Perhaps high 7’s for me.

  2. Inoffensive, upbeat. Would play in background as I’m working, but fails to make a firm grip in my memory. Feels it’ll be fated to fade into obscurity in the coming months and years

  3. Piano is reminiscent of ‘Juicy Wiggle’ or ‘9 to 5’.

I’d like the chorus to have a bit more bite, and for there to be an instrumental in the bridge, but it is official: The post-Izone curse (first two songs are good, third one is bad) stops at #3. Yena, Eunbi, and now Yuri have had solid #4 songs.

    • RE: “curse” – hopefully RBW and WM is wise enough to avoid it for Chaeyeon. also, the post-IZ*ONE groups would beg to differ on this curse…half of them, at least; After Like is excellence.

  4. Doesn’t quite hit the heights of love shh. She continues at an even pace after loveable. Nothing wrong with that, but I’m not sure this song’s making my playlist.

    Eunbi remains the strongest soloist.

  5. Quite generic, but it’s so upbeat that’s the kind of thing I would listen in the morning while dressing up before work. A 7 for me.
