Song Review: Primrose – Laffy Taffy

Primrose - Laffy TaffyPrimrose debuted as a duo this January, became a solo act in March and are now a four-member group. That’s a ton of change for a rookie act! Eagle-eyed viewers may notice Hot Issue’s Nahyun and bugAboo’s Rainie among the new members. Somehow, Primrose has become a super group — collecting performers from fallen idol groups to avenge their good name. Or, at least that’s how my mind processes it…

Primrose’s debut teased potential that Laffy Taffy doesn’t quite bear out. The song is a swerve into cutesier territory, placing sugary sweet hooks over trap-adjacent percussion and booming bass. Despite its namesake, nothing about Laffy Taffy really sticks with me. There’s a lot going on, yet very little actually happening. I’m not sure if that makes sense, but it’s the best way I can describe a track that’s simultaneously overstuffed and unengaging.

The girls cast off a decent groove and some of the rap-heavier portions work well. There’s clearly talent here, but Laffy Taffy needs a stronger hook and a more original vision to stand out.

  1. I was looking forward to this “debut” because Hot Issue and Bugaboo were groups who had amazing vocalist and were engaging to watch.

I didn’t have much expectations for this but I actually enjoyed it. The rap part actually wasn’t bad, which was a blessing. It would have been funny if they had a few lyrics from Laffy Taffy from D4L (iykyk) but I guess I’m showing my age.

Also, Ryan Jhun will pay for disbanding Bugaboo. And now Rain and Brand New Music will pay for disbanding Ciipher and BDC. I love Kpop but man, I can’t deal with talented groups disbanding every other day.

  2. This sounds like something NewJeans might do. I think it’s okay and the chorus has already become a major earworm, but I love aespa for their bangers more than anything else. I’m there will be some in the future👍👍

  3. I live for the bass in this song. Normally trap isn’t my thing but it works in this case. The hooks, unfortunately, just come and go. Sometimes I think it’s better to have an awful hook like “,crash crash crash dash dash dash” then one that leaves no impression.

  4. I think this song has many of the same problems that other releases have had this month. The instrumental and the vocals don’t really work together; they’re both doing their own thing. This isn’t to say they don’t sound good, but it’s like neither of them are feeding off the other. There’s plenty opportunity for this track to ramp up (see 1:40), and it’s literally just a mixing problem. Boost them, make them hit a little harder, and you have a pretty good song
