Song Review: Seventeen – Ima (Even If The World Ends Tomorrow)

Seventeen - Ima (Even If The World Ends Tomorrow)“Best Of” albums are far more common in the Japanese market than any other country I’m aware of, and that extends to K-pop acts. Ima (Even If The World Ends Tomorrow) (今 -明日 世界が終わっても-) is taken from Seventeen’s first “best of,” marking another stage in their successful career. And though the track was composed by the usual suspects (Woozi, Bumzu and Hwang Hyun), it feels in conversation with current J-pop releases.

Japan is also one of the few music markets that retains a very popular, dynamic rock scene. Listeners love their guitars, and Ima puts this in the forefront. It’s become a cliché to compare this style of track to an anime opening, but Ima really fits the bill. Its pace is sprightly, it’s generous with instrumental solos, and its surging melody evokes a sense of movement and adventure. The song lacks the oomph to put it over the top, but it’s a relentlessly pleasant toe-tapper with good vibes and catchy hooks. Sometimes, that’s enough!

Ima also has a refreshing sense of looseness — something I wouldn’t usually conflate with idol acts. There’s plenty of space for the robust instrumental to shine and the group’s performance feels unfussy and natural. These strengths are also the reason the song can’t hit the highs of Seventeen’s most dynamic singles. But it’s not trying to, and that feeling of ease makes for a breezy, enjoyable listen.

  1. The beat has the best of both worlds: fast eighth notes in the percussion to match Jpop sprightly speed expectations; quarter notes in the vocal so it is actually singable.
As for the song itself, it sounds like upscale highly polished fan service. Rating is about right.
