Song Review: BOYNEXTDOOR – But Sometimes

BOYNEXTDOOR - But SometimesThough I didn’t connect with BOYNEXTDOOR’s debut tracks as strongly as I would have liked, I appreciate their commitment to a signature sound and the bright, youthful energy their music portrays. But Sometimes (뭣 같아) is a quick comeback after their May debut and further develops their unique point of view.

This song isn’t as catchy as something like One And Only, but it’s satisfying in a different way. Echoing their first song But I Like You, many moments in But Sometimes sound more like an indie rock band than a polished idol act. This rough-around-the-edges energy forges BOYNEXTDOOR’s greatest appeal. At their best, they bring a punky (but not remotely dangerous) edge to this new K-pop era. The trick is finding the right songs to harness this strength.

I appreciate But Sometimes‘ sound more than the song itself. The melodies could be much stronger and the production doesn’t make any interesting turns. It’s all very straightforward, but BOYNEXTDOOR’s personality elevates the material. They sneer all over the track, adding intensity to otherwise forgettable lines. The rap verse is well-integrated and the instrumental has a loose, live-band feel that makes for an engaging listen all the way through.

  1. I am hearing late era Block B jaunty b-side, when they lost their indie cred and were riding out on past goodness, without all the unique personalities of the Block B’ers.
Snotty is a term being mentioned often this season. Ealy Block B were the super snotty punks of kpop. Real punks, who left their record contracts, restarted with one of the parents money, put out a few hits that sounded like nothing else out there, then settled a few years later into rehashes of dull middle age.

  2. Am I the only one who thinks this group always shouting instead of singing? Is it their signature or something? Song is okay but the shouting-singing kinda grating to my ears
