Song Review: Jaechan (DKZ) – Hello

Jaechan (DKZ) - HelloDKZ’s Jaechan recieved a big boost in popularity thanks to his starring role in BL drama Semantic Error, buoying the fate of his group alongside his own career. So, it only makes sense that he’d venture into solo work. After August’s pre-release Time, he’s unveiled his first title track Hello.

Popularity aside, not every idol performer needs to be a soloist. I don’t pose this as negative judgment… I just don’t hear a reason for Hello to exist. It doesn’t tell me anything about Jaechan as an artist. Instead, it’s bogged down by cheesy slang and a dull, droning arrangement that relies way too heavily on autotune. The chorus is catchy but too silly to work as an authentic r&b jam. I guess we’ll just call this fan service in musical form and leave it at that.

    • singaporean here, we’re *kind* of progressive (same-sex sexual activity was legalized last year) but society at large is still mostly conservative. you would probably get side eyed as an openly gay couple but no one would outright hate crime you! the lgbt community still faces discrimination both by regular citizens and government regulation. so yeah that explains the 18+ rating

also i love jaechan as a person but this song is so obviously a cash grab for his fujoshi/fudanshi fanbase. although i must admit i’m part of the target audience LOL
