Song Review: Lee Chaeyeon – Let’s Dance

Lee Chaeyeon - Let's Dance

Lee Chaeyeon’s Knock experienced unexpected longevity on the charts, lodging its catchy hook in many listeners’ brains. She’s found her niche in quirky dance pop, which perfectly compliments the musical perspective of her agency WM Entertainment. New single Let’s Dance seeks to build on this success by smoothing the edges and delivering an explosive energy targeted straight toward the mainstream.

This energy is Let’s Dance‘s best asset. I love where the song is attempting to go and Chaeyeon makes for an eager chaperone down this ebullient path. At its best, the track offers a head rush of party-starting glee. This is most evident during its pre-chorus, which blooms with a sunny melody.

Unfortunately, the rest of Let’s Dance is too repetitive for its own good. I had this same issue with Knock, but the hooks were more interesting there. Let’s Dance proves to be a one-trick-pony and wears that trick into the ground. Its bright, exciting verve pulls it across the line, but the melodies are almost too sugary to enjoy across the song’s full running time. It’s like being pummeled into the ground by positivity. This can be fun with the right single, but it usually leaves you craving a bit of edge.
