Song Review: V (BTS) – Slow Dancing

V (BTS) - Slow DancingWhile some BTS members have aimed straight for the top of the charts with their solo work, others have taken a more niche route that compliments their personal taste. In V’s case, that means an album of lo-fi, smooth jazzy sounds. It’s clearly a style he enjoys and it works well with his voice, even if the end product may not be commercial in obvious ways.

Unfortunately, this is also a style I find quite uncompelling. It’s pleasant and calming, but that’s just not where my head’s usually at when listening to music. In fact, I can scarcely remember how either of V’s pre-release tracks sound despite having played them multiple times in preparation for the blog. I predict Slow Dancing will suffer the same fate. In the moment, it’s a nice bit of loungey, downtempo pop — atmospheric and textured. However, its melodies tend to evaporate immediately after the song’s finished. There’s not much that sticks here, making this feel better suited to background study music than a main focal point.

The aspect I find most fascinating about Slow Dancing is the prominence of its instrumental. The entire last minute (a third of its overall running time) is devoted to a purely instrumental outro. You don’t hear that often (or ever!) in pop singles. In theory, this freeform structure is interesting. I’m not sure the execution lives up to the idea, but in its own way this is a daring move. Bonus points go to the production’s prominent use of woodwinds — another sound you don’t hear often in mainstream pop. I may not have much room on my playlist for this kind of song, but it strikes me as the strongest of the three tracks V has promoted from this project.

  1. Honestly, the instrumental outro was amazing. It’s really nice to see some woodwinds in pop music; we need more of that in k-pop. V also sounds great. The jazzier, lo-fi music really suits his voice very well.

    • If you enjoy woodwinds I recommend you to listen to BTSs 134340 (if you already haven’t) it’s one of my favourite songs as someone who really loves woodwinds in songs.

    • Yes, it was very pleasing to the ears. It would be nice if all of everyone’s music could hit the top 200, but if the are having fun, 🤷. Not everything is for everyone! I enjoy it.

  2. It’s middddd.

I can’t understand why he sounds like he has a frog stuck in his throat, STILL. I just can’t put my finger on it.

It’s a sound that actually increased the longer their career has gone on. His voice wasn’t always like that.

    • Agree during stigma, inner child it was better now he doesn’t sound like that especially now when his solo career started it is going to be very bad hope in future he will get better but for now it is the worst debut sorry being rude

  3. Definitely not my type of music, but have to say it was a daring step to do not everyone can do this, it is clearly seen he doesn’t care about charts or anything it is this he enjoys and he likes and he is not forcing anyone to like it though it may disappoint his some fans but the onesame who love his music will support anyway hope he will do better in future

    • I have to agree yes totally something different then what his fans are used too but I really enjoy it . V likes to expand in different areas of music but always puts his 100% into it… ❤️

      • Aw man… He knew there would be (perhaps even) a majority who demand energy, percussion, hard core rapping etc and therefore he knew and didn’t care that his style wouldn’t be appreciated by a majority but ….if you’re measuring success by a classic style that will live forever V/Taehyung is gold. And there is no frog here whatsoever…smooth, mellow, repeat playable – you never tire of it. And giving instrumentalists their due. He respects them and their contribution, never going for the cheap shot (and soooo very common ) “hit” sound that everybody and their brother shoot out there over and over. Layover-every song is original. Love the concept, the voice, the VM. I didn’t think would because I could see what was happening and was hesitant that an entire album of vocal jazz wouldn’t be gold. But it IS….for me. I hope others feel that way too.

  4. I am very very curious about how he will perform this live during promotions with that whole empty last third! I like it a lot, but it is such a hard sell on performance!

  5. In the evenings I work behind the counter of a little cafe where I can play whatever music I want to set the vibe. This fits in perfectly with the 9+ hour playlists of lofi smooth jazz I would go with when I’m not feeling particularly bold on the choice of music and just settle for “coffeeshop background.” And…that’s all I have to say about this lol

  6. Interesting that anytime you review BTS songs. 99% Negative. Are you actually a writer? Because you write not in a place that is not biased. I’ve seen your other BP reviews. Always high praise. Why don’t you be honest and just say your not a BTS fan and be done with it and just stay in your own lane.

    • Interesting how you and your kind take offense for constructive criticisms when in fact there’s nothing to be offended about. I suggest you grow a thick hide of skin because that kind of attitude will destroy you in real life. Just a tip.

    • “you write not in a place that is not biased.” First off, the wording has double negatives that cancel each other out. It obfuscates your main point. Second, the name of this blog is literally “the BIAS list.” The musical perspective of this writer comes from A PLACE OF BIAS. We all have our own biases. It just turned out that his musical bias is electrifying, bombastic, showstopping, energizing, synth-driven, disco-fueled music with percolating beats, whatever that means. And I respect that. I may hate the type of music that he likes 75% of the time, but I respect his musical taste. The same way that your musical taste, or mine, should also be respected. The Golden Rule states that you should not do unto others what you want to be done unto you. If you don’t respect his musical taste and biases, why should he respect yours? Live and let live, just be chill, and stop being someone with a pole stuck up his/her ass all the time, because that attitude would lead to your downfall. You’ll always be offended, triggered, squirmish, skitterish, and angered by every little thing. The world will tear you up. And you don’t want that to happen, do you? It’s a dog eat dog world, and only those who are fit will survive and thrive. Right now, you are not thriving. You are withering. Peace.

  7. I love the song so much, but why does V sound like that? It’s like he’s gargling something in his mouth. I’ve heard that style of singing enunciation in Purple Kiss, and I kinda don’t like it. But the song? It’s so good.

  8. At least he have the bold to do something different and make his fans know that music is nit only jumping and dancing only it’s also to relax and enjoy it good work for V and form me it’s very beautiful songs and for the one who sleep that’s good for it’s better to sleep on this kind of music than the crazy one. I’m sure that V doesn’t care about charts he did what he likes and we enjoyed his music and voice. Congratulations for your courage and challenge in this crazy, rude, commercial world and good luck.

  10. I guess you and I really have different musical taste cause I never seem to agree with most of your ratings and this is no different. I tend to love mellow music which feels soothing and this is right up my alley with it’s jazzy feel. This some many not pack a punch but it feels calming like something you’ll hear in a jazz bar. It’s just very welcoming.

    • And to be honest I really hated his works that he did under BTS like his solo tracks in their albums so I’m happy that he found his sound because it really fits with his voice

    • I so much agree with this, not all music must be energetic or funny, sometimes I just need to relax. I have a really stressful job and when I come back home I love having some coffee while listening to some music and Taehyung has made my afternoons a lot more pleasant than usual lately. I prefer listening to more energetic songs before work so I feel more pumped up lol. Every tune has a different situation.
