Song Review: INI – Hana

INI - HanaGood things come to those who wait, and in the case of INI that means better music. I’ve been a fan of the group since their Produce 101 days, but their first year of releases left much to be desired. However, they’ve been on a roll in 2023, kicking off with digital single New Day and continuing with the fantastic Fanfare. New single Hana might be their best yet.

When I write about melody, I’m usually complaining about the lack of it. Refreshingly, Hana‘s biggest asset is its melodic heft. The progression during the chorus is so satisfying, delivering a double-barreled refrain that goes from soft to punchy with ease. I’ve always been a fan of INI’s vocalists, and their ethereal tone powers this hook with a hazy sound that compliments the melodic turns. It’s almost shoegazy in nature — a unlikely subgenre that can work well with idol groups. Gorgeous synth textures further elevate this mood.

Hana‘s verses aren’t nearly as interesting, and the second one plunges into an unnecessary energy shift. However, Hana hits its stride during its climax, amplifying its strengths to craft a satisfying culmination that feels emotional and cathartic. I could see this creeping further up my ratings scale with more plays.

(And if you enjoy Golcha-esque power pop with an 80’s synth edge, b-side 10 Things is also excellent)

  1. There are some nice moments. And there are some just passing time moments. A couple nice voices in there.

I feel like the boys and the producers could have done more to lean into the material. I feel like it is set at 8 or 9 in parts, and should be a 10 or 11. Especially the vocal volume and intensity needs to be front and center, and swell build then diminish. The song holds back and doesn’t soar as high as the material is written for.

Right about here is a good time to repost my favorite softer song of the year, nSSign’s “Higher”. Lordy I love this song.
