Song Review: Xodiac – Only Fun

Xodiac - Only FunThe success of BTS’s Dynamite continues to cast a long shadow as more and more boy groups try their hand at upbeat “everyone get out of your seats and dance!” type of Disney musical songs. It’s hard to get these exactly right, striking the balance between enjoyable cheese and corporate schlock. Most of these recent efforts lean closer to the latter, blunting their overall effect. Producers need to go listen to debut-era Golden Child to see how this energy is really done!

Xodiac’s Only Fun delivers exactly what it promises. It’s bright and infectious. You can practically hear the members’ smiles (forced or not) within the song itself. Its brassy, bounding energy pairs well with Seventeen’s recent God Of Music, but like that song it lacks the teeth to really stand out. I’m not sure how well its unrelenting optimism works on its own, but it would make a great High School Musical style dance routine on top of lunch tables before the bell rings for the next class.

  1. I am always skeptical of songs which tell me to have fun without actual fun actually having. Well at least the song doesn’t tell me to put my hands up.

But seriously, this song reminds me of every Disney theme park parade ever, on a loop.

Also, the brass in this song reminds me of the brass in this old b-side gem from Super Junior “Runaway” from 2017’s Play album, bootleg video below. I believe this particular clip was recorded during quarantine, so live live singing like a proper Super Show but with lightsticks standing in for the audience. Also Kyuhyun was still on military service during the original album, so he gets to play teacher without any sung lines.

  2. Xodiac also did “special love,” which I like but reminds me too much of “Cupid” to really be, well… special. Seems their producers are really throwing every trend at the wall to see what sticks.

  3. First of all, this song is awesome!! What I like to call pure Kpop fun. Even the name fits😍. I think this concept is difficult to pull off these days and in my opinion they did a good job with it.

I associate this sound with some oldies like:
Golden Child’s – Let Me and Damdadi.
    ONF’s – Poppin’, Beautiful Beautiful
    B1A4’s playful songs
    Seventeen’s – Adore U and Pretty U

More recent releases I could place in the same category of “songs that make me smile like an idiot”, probably AIMER’s Bubble, ONF’s Love Effect, Nine.i’s Turn it off, and The Boyz’ Lip Gloss.

    Does anyone even remember Menudo?

The nostalgia is real, it brought a smile to my face and for that I love love love it!!!

  4. This reminds me a lot of Cravity’s Boogie Woogie… I think what sets God of Music apart from these kinds of songs is the Kung Chi Pak Chi Kung Kung Chi Pak Chi Yeah which is just so ridiculous and catchy.
