Song Review: Omega X – Junk Food

Omega X - Junk FoodOmega X have been through the wringer over the past few years, so even if their music hasn’t always been my thing it’s hard not to root for them. Junk Food is their first comeback after their successful lawsuit against former agency Spire Entertainment and sees them continue to develop their noisy, bombastic style.

What’s up with all the food metaphors lately? Junk Food pairs nicely with Macaroni Cheese, though the songs themselves don’t share much in common. While I rarely enjoy idols shouting at me as the basis for a song, I appreciate Junk Food‘s consistency. If you’re going to craft a confrontational track like this, it needs to keep up the energy throughout its entire running time. Junk Food swerves from one hook to another with glee. Its production is surprisingly compelling, built upon a strong beat ornamented with synth strings and touches of rhythm guitar. Some moments are quite haunting, adding great atmosphere to the track. Those synths often sound like muted ambulance sirens, giving Junk Food a palpable sense of tension.

Readers, you need to help me out with Junk Food‘s chorus. I feel like I’ve heard this exact vocal rhythm/phrasing before in a recent girl group track (I wanna say ITZY?). However, I can’t quite place which song it reminds me of. At any rate, the hook works surprisingly well, even if I would have preferred more melodic heft. Kudos to Omega X for simultaneously meeting and subverting my expectations.

  1. I’m a bit confused.
Given all that happened to Omega X in the last months, I was expecting a “WOW! Effect” comeback that could showcase their talent and turn the support and the sympathy they received in the meantime in a solid, loyal fanbase.
Instead, here we go again and again and again with the same NCT AI-generated pattern, the same generic good-boy-gone-bad concept and the same been-there-done-that EP with the same anonymous pastiche of genres.

It’s really a pity, because the boys deserved – would deserve – much more and much better, not just in the hinc et nunc but also for what their path has been so far.

  2. Not a fan of this, it sounds like a NCT throw away. Omega X has such a talented line up consisting of groups I really enjoyed (especially 1team, 1the9, and Enoi) and they have such amazing vocalist but this was mostly “rapping.” Plus 4 of these kids were main vocals of their previous but they barely get to showcase those vocals.

Oh well, i’m glad they’re back and seem to be doing well. Hopefully, this new company won’t take advantage of them.

  3. Okay, maybe the first part of the hook is just reminding me of the chorus to Fifth Harmony’s Bo$$, which is neither recent nor k-pop 🤪

    I feel like there’s also a k-pop equivalent, though…

  4. Usually I have good tolerancy for boygroup songs like this, but not for this song, I think. I like the productions, I like the verses and bridge, but hate the chorus. Melodic chorus would’ve saved this song a lot. The second part of the chorus doesn’t even rhyme??

Honestly I thought Nick would rate this 7 or 6 lol

  5. It’s NCT-coded, which can be a hit-or-miss for me. Not that far-off, since ‘Junk Food’ was also written by some SM-affiliated producers and songwriters. Thankfully, it leans into that exciting hit territory, serving me interesting textures and production. It has that urban thriller or spy movie kind of feel to it.

That chorus sets the tone for OMEGA X, it’s much more subdued and sleek than what NCT usually offers. A much more contained and mature NCT bragging energy, if you will.
