K-Pop Risers & Fallers: November 2023

Risers & FallersRather than contain my “Risers and Fallers” feature to a single post in June, I’m going to share a bite-sized version at the end of each month. This will let me account for more songs and make a nice lead-in to the monthly round-up post.

I anticipate most of these ratings adjustments will be negligible: a 0.5 shift here, a 0.25 shift there. But, it’s a fun way to keep track of how my feelings on songs have changed over time – as well as which tracks currently have momentum on my playlist.

And remember, just because a song is marked as a “faller” doesn’t mean I hate it! Falling from a “9” to an “8.75” is no shame. 9+ rated songs occupy a totally different playlist in my music library, so I’m pretty particular about what qualifies. It’s a high bar.

This month’s feature covers the period from October 24th to November 20th.

  1. I feel that aespa’s Drama grow on me and it’s on its way to become one of my most played. I just love how dramatic cringefest it is even the talk-rapping part didn’t bother me much.

I love all of their output for this year. Truly great year for them.

  2. Talk Saxy was my biggest riser in a lot of time, I am so addicted right now I listen to it at least 5 times a day. The bridge!!! It’s so iconic it became a trend lol I am SO MAD about Seunghan’s hiatus, I can’t believe SM will really let this happen to their brand new group.

  3. Talk Saxy was a huge riser for me – I wasn’t too sure about it in the beginning and now I have become addicted to it! I really like Riize’s sound, I haven’t been this excited about a group’s sound for a while. I just hope that the issues surrounding the group don’t mess everything up….

    • Not getting ONF vibes yet, but I definitely appreciate a catchy pop track that maintains its intensity all the way through. They’re surprisingly hard to find in K-pop at the moment!

  4. I think that for me, Chill Kill has become one of my top songs. I have been singing ‘Hey, don’t think about tomorrow’ nonstop. And the vocals in that extended bridge has become my favorite thing. Ice Cream Cake is one of my favorite Red Velvet songs and for me, Chill Kill it’s like its spiritual successor. And I love it so much!

  5. The way I already predicted that crush by zerobaseone will be one of your risers song…. because I think the song is really good. And I can tell it’s well made noise music song and it’s not just generic Loud music.

  6. November was really a really good month. Obviously Taemin is my favorite. I can’t put SHINee not first. Its too out of character. ZEROBASEONE, Viviz, WayV, Kiss Of Life, Vixx, The Boyz, Enhypen, Seventeen, and Red Velvet all put out projects I really really liked.

  7. I must’ve been high on the moment to have given THE BOYZ a 9/10 for ‘Watch it’. This is a first but it’s dropping down to 8.5/10. It’s not hitting as hard as it did with the first few listens and watches of the mv but that bridge and final part of the song is still SO GOOD.

Taemin’s mini album is Incredible. The wait was so so worth it.
My rating for ‘Guilty’ would have been 8.5/10 but now it’s 9.5/10. An incredible release added to his incredible discography.
    The album as a whole – 9.5/10

Aespa’s ‘Drama’ is also an incredible release. The BRIDGE, Winter’s viral part, Oh My Lord, I am obsessed. I don’t know if I commented anything related to Aespa’s ‘Spicy’ but ever since that release, I have been a huge fan.
    ‘Drama’ – 8.75 → 9/10

Jungkook’s solo releases aren’t connecting with me as much as I thought it would but ‘Standing Next To You’ and the ‘Golden’ album are Top Tier.
    ‘Standing Next To You’ – 9/10 → 9.5/10
    ‘Golden’ as a whole – 9/10

  9. I love how Taemin’s, RIIZE’s and ZB1’s new songs all grew on you. They were all growers for me as well; although I don’t think they are as amazing as their other songs in the past, they all turn out to be solid additions to their discographies.

Also, can we expect Jungkook’s “Standing Next to You” to be on the top 10 of your k-pop songs this year? 👀 I mean, all of his singles (and his album) released this year are in English but maybe it can be considered since he is a k-pop artist?
