Song Review: NMIXX – Soñar (Breaker)

NMIXX - Soñar (Breaker)NMIXX will be one of the first acts to make a 2024 comeback, but before that they’ve unveiled pre-release Soñar (Breaker). So far, 2023 has seen them move away from the intense “mixx pop” that characterized their debut (and polarized opinion). It’s been nice to hear their vocals more clearly, with July’s Roller Coaster a particular standout.

Soñar (Breaker) returns the group to the abrasive sounds of said debut. As a song, it’s more straightforward than O.O. It sticks with a couple of repeated musical ideas, anchored by a chanted chorus that feels almost like an incantation. In between, we’ve got shouty sing-talk during verse one (bad) and a more subdued melodic segment for verse two (better). The song is most successful when its instrumental surges with SuperM-style bombast. The opening feels cinematic — like a battle royale about to start. These elements deserve a stronger song to support them.

We get another peek at this musical drama during Soñar‘s surging bridge. Much of the song’s vocal-focused moments feel strained (there’s no reason the pitch couldn’t be lowered), but when NMIXX are allowed to let loose in a comfortable range, they’re one of the more gifted rookie groups of this era. They simply need better material. Soñar is a decent example of this specific K-pop style, but its lack of knockout moments makes it more monotonous than exciting.

  1. I actually enjoyed the song overall, I wish the garage part was longer though. (20 seconds, seriously?)

MIXXPOP just being a pre-release probably means theres something a lot more cohesive and stronger for the title track. I’m placing my bet that it’s Run For Roses but I don’t know if it’s smart that they released the title track months beforehand.

I’d love to know your thoughts on the separated O.O tracks they revealed at the fan concert though!

  2. It’s nice to see them go back to their mixxpop roots and imo this is their best example yet. I may not like the chorus or any of the sing-talking parts at first listen but chances are they’ll grow on me since the rest of the song is not bad.

  3. I feel like it’s a nice blend between O.O/Dice and their newer material. They definitely improved on the MIXXPOP genre this time around with better transitions and blend of genres. I like the cinematic SuperM approach and I can see them continue this style – out of the current GGs, I think NMIXX and Aespa (maybe Le Sserafim if we can hear them do something like that) are great contenders to do SuperM’s style of bombastic superhero cinematic music. I wish the first verse wasn’t so typical though, girlies please sing!

  4. I liked O.O and Dice more tbh. Without any instrumentals, Mixxpop doesn’t overwhelm the senses anywhere nearly as hard. Though I am quite pleased they are continuing with Mixxpop considering there was concerns they dropped it after Jinni left

  5. Tbh i never really liked their mixx pop concept. I only started listening to them when they came out with love me like this. There are parts of this song i like and the beat change has far more finesse than O.O but im not 100% sold on it. Its not bad tho and i think ill put it on my playlist.

    • i just feel like their mixxpop concept is just a bunch of wasted potential, as their producers are just mending it to generic girl group sounds and a bunch of singtalk

basically igab and next level but watered down

  7. This might sound like a hate comment but it’s really not… Kyujin’s voice is not favorable for the chorus she has a nice rap flow. If I was the producer I’ll give the chorus to bae, prechorus to sullyhoon and less screech like sounds to lily.

  8. I came in expecting not to like the song and expecting the “change up” part of the song to be jarring like “O.O” and “Dice”, but I was pleasantly surprised when I ended up liking the song and the “change up” part actually went quite well with the rest of the song, imo, compared to “O.O” and “Dice.” Imo, this song is proof that their “mixxpop” sound can work and I feel like if they continue putting out “mixxpop” songs, their music will only get better and better if done correctly.
