Song Review: Jimin (BTS) – Closer Than This

Jimin - Closer Than ThisI wasn’t sure whether to write about Jimin’s Closer Than This or not. These fan songs and nostalgic behind-the-scenes videos skirt the line between “single” and “b-side,” but he seems too big of an artist to ignore.

This style of track tends to follow a familiar template, making it hard to have a strong opinion on it one way or another. If you’re a Jimin devotee, this is going to feel like a very welcome holiday present. Casual fans may not find as much to get excited about — especially compared to the more bombastic material he’s released as singles earlier this year.

Closer Than This is at once subdued and rousing, especially as we reach its clap-along finale. Jimin sounds great on the track, his voice freed from the excessive vocal effects that characterized much of his solo debut. There’s an ease to this sound that matches him well, even if the song never steps out of place enough to become interesting. For those seeking a pleasant groove to put on in the background, Closer Than This will be a solid choice. And every once and awhile — like on the nearly-acapella second verse — the song stops you in your tracks and demands attention.

    • JIMIN doesn’t have thee best voice..(I think he truly doesn’t know how great it can be) however it is a unique voice with lots of possibilities if he would be willing to let go. The whole entire song is so touching, how can you not have a warm feeling from it. It’s sad and happy at the same time. JIMIN we love you!

  1. Well Nick – I was finally able to read thru’ your review without wanting to scream at the end (as I usually do after some of them). I’m a thru’ & thru’ Jimin fan as in ‘mesmerized’. However, as a 70 some yr old Cdn. grandma who in her day was a diehard Beatlemaniac, and has some background in song, dance and acting (outside of my 3 medical specialties which are my real life) I can separate my BTS awe from reality. Indeed when I listened to this for the first time, while working, it didn’t leave me with any particular feeling to the point that I had to replay it a few times to make sure I wasn’t missing something. Perhaps the most notable – and for me personally pleasing – was his singing in his more comfortable registers. A nice change. Of course I added it to my BTS library, but won’t miss it if I don’t play it again. Perhaps the MV is relatively more meaningful – simply because it’s “Jimin”. PS this comment isn’t intended for anyone other than yourself.

  2. I enjoyed it for what it is as I’m part of the target audience. It’s not going to set the world on fire…but felt like a warm hug from Jimin to army. I also liked his real vocals here.

  3. I really loved that it focused more on his voice than anything else. Jimin’s voice is wonderful and I think he does a good job showing emotion. This song is like a warm hug, and I enjoy it for what it is.
