Song Review: Twice – I Got You

Twice - I Got YouIf we were to judge solely by Korean comebacks, Twice had a relatively sparse 2023. It’s hard to believe it’s been nearly a year since Set Me Free was released. The group has been on a roll awhile now, luxuriating in their space as a long-running, extremely stable idol act. JYP Entertainment has also been on a roll lately, unveiling a strong suite of songs for its girl groups.

English-language pre-release I Got You feels like a love letter to fans — a welcoming embrace as Twice prepare for the release of their latest mini album. It has the pleasant weightlessness of a fan song, but wafts along a sprightly, synth-kissed beat that keeps it from feeling too saccharine. Much like the group’s pristine image, the track glistens.

There’s a wistfulness to the instrumental that supports the softly anthemic melodies. I love the repeated synth flourishes that echo the girls’ vocals. They have an almost celestial tone, softening an already soothing texture. The vocal performance also embraces a streamlined sophistication. While I Got You could stand to be a bit more daring in both composition and execution, it’s nice to hear a straightforward, heartfelt approach every once and awhile. Songs in this vein benefit from a history to draw upon, and Twice’s eight year run in the industry gives I Got You extra punch. They remain one of the most consistent acts working today.

  1. It feels so fresh and soulful. It almost feels like indie pop. This is their best pre-release song ever. You can feel their emotion. It’s real music. That’s what’s sets TWICE apart for me. This is K-pop yet it transcends the genre as well. A stunning song and a new highlight of their career without any doubt. I love the fact their music keeps getting more personal.

I am biased because I’m a ONCE obviously. I love so many of their songs but I usually name Talk That Talk and I Can’t Stop Me as their best singles (both a 10 duh). This one is right up there with them but I’m not sure where yet. It has to sink in. This one had me crying.

Now I want that double Jeongyeon ending on the Spotify version too. My favorite vocalist. I love her voice and the emotion you can feel when she sings.

        • Actually she’s one of the best and most versatile vocalists of TWICE. She’s a carry for the group live, and arguably the best live (look at their concerts). She’s lead vocalist for a reason.

But why bother talking to a troll and hater like you lol. Find a hobby. Bye.

    • To the credit of the strength of this song: I am not a ONCE at all, and often do not like Twice songs. This song absolutely slaps. The last time I was this impressed by Twice was “Perfect World”.

The only other thing I will say is that the MV also has surprising depth and an 8 year veteran group pulls it off. Younger groups it would seem like a shallow vacation or an “I’m on a boat” moment, yet it truly seems like an earned escape with beloved friends because of their history. Well done.

  2. 100% on the celestial tone. With 8 years of experience, you’d think they’d start singing about their success and shutting down their haters. Instead, they give us this song highlighting their humbleness and friendships with each other and their fans. I think only TWICE would think like this. It’s so classic TWICE. Its exactly like the MV, such a warm song to keep you company amidst the cold storm!

  3. Let me start by saying that I completely understand that Kpop is a business that sells the illusion that the artists are your friends and they think of nothing else but you (or each other)…I get it. But Twice is something else, man. I really don’t know how to phrase it. Doomers do what doomers do, but these girls are just different. The day this ends is gonna be a rough one.

I like this much more than Moonlight Sunrise. It feels like a fandom anthem. They let Momo sing naturally. I love when they give Sana and Tzuyu chorus leads. Tzuyu’s pronunciation is amazing for someone who doesn’t speak the language. They didn’t shoehorn in a rap like Set Me Free which was my only issue with that song. They let the song be the song, if that makes sense. I’d go 9.25. The M/V was perfect.

    • I totally agree. Of course this is also their job but with TWICE you can feel they love to make music, perform and create other content for their fans. And you can hear that love in their music. That’s what makes their music real and sets them apart from the rest for me and they don’t get enough credit for it.

The girls really do share a close bond with ONCE. They know everything that’s going on in the fandom.

While I enjoy Set Me Free and Moonlight Sunrise (Got The Thrills is the winner on that album, though every song on it is good), I Got You is on another level for sure.

They have released a huge amount of music during their career because they really enjoy doing that for their fans. I really grew up with them since 2015 and I can’t think of a life without TWICE honestly.

    • I think this is true future nostalgia. I hope they last forever. This song started out hopeful and made me smile and halfway through I started bawling 😦 instant classic

    • Totally agree – Twice’s genuineness sets them apart in K-pop. “I Got You” is a perfect anthem celebrating their bond with ONCEs. The catchy melodies, well-blended vocals, and inspiring lyrics epitomize their signature feel-good sound.

It’s emotional thinking about how Twice has soundtracked so many eras of my life over the past 8 years. They are truly special, and I’m grateful to have their music and be part of this passionate fandom. Here’s to many more timeless Twice songs and memories!

  4. Twice is back! Great song. Its firmly in the current 80’s revival, yet contemporary, with a very small Swift flair in the brief low vocal line excursion. And does all of that while still being effortlessly effervescent.

    Good job!

    • Your comments are sometimes so me, but if you remove any existing filters and turn the volume up😂. I actually like this more than a 7, (or a C), but I can see where you’re coming from. I’m not a girl group enjoyer myself, rarely ever I jam with them, and I really wonder actually, who is your favorite act?

  5. Ooooh, I LOVE this! It’s atmospheric and ethereal, they sound lovely, and they’re not aiming for the rafters with the key that they’ve set it in – it’s comfortable. I do love that low vocal line in the prechorus, and I also love how they sang the whole thing, no rap shoved in there. Very excited for their upcoming mini album!!

  6. I think this is my favorite English release of all time from Twice! It’s so ethereal and synth-heavy. It’s also nice to hear all of them sing in their comfortable ranges (the low notes in the pre-chorus!!!). I can’t wait for their new album!!

Also, is it me or JYP’s girl groups have been on a roll lately?! It feels like it’s 2019 all over again.

  7. This style is never really my favourite, but I can get on board with this song! I’m also pleasantly surprised by the cohesion of the English lyrics here.
