After last week’s pre-release, iKON’s DK is back with the title track from first solo album. Groovin vaults him out from the murky mire of LTNS and deposits him in the club.
The song’s minimalist sound is surprisingly effective. It’s more of a “vibe” track than a dance track, but DK’s smooth vocals glide over the sparse percussion with satisfying ease. The chorus is especially enjoyable, delivering a melody with far more range than I’d expected from such a subdued production. I’m not sure I’ll remember Groovin at end of the year, but for now it’s a nice palette-cleanser between bigger and more bombastic K-pop releases.

As a very casual iKON listener, this is sung very well and I quite like it but this sounds like something that might fit in very well with B.I’s solo discography in terms of vibes. Nothing wrong with that of course, but I am surprised about this being the direction for DK. He seems to suit this quite well though!

Knowing DK’s slight American background (when he studied abroad), I’m not surprised by his strong R&B roots. He deeply appreciates and always leaned toward more R&B and Hip Hop outside of iKON. I’m so happy we finally get to feel his essence. He always shys away. As a huge R&B lover, I thought he captured the atmosphere and essence perfectly. I know I’ll remember this song at the end of 2024.
