Song Review: Tempest – Baddest Behavior

Tempest - Baddest BehaviorTempest have a new comeback on the horizon, and I’m confident it’ll be good. This confidence comes from math. For whatever reason, the group seems to alternate between songs I love and songs I loath. I’ve cracked the pattern, and after last September’s awful Vroom Vroom we’re in for a Can’t Stop Shining style hit! Before then, we must mire through this Japanese debut, which takes all the wrong cues from their discography.

Baddest Behavior is obnoxious shouting over equally obnoxious production. It falls neatly into this specific boy group niche and I happen to be quite exhausted by it. It’s time to turn the musical page, and I feel like that change is actually (finally!) happening in K-pop.

I’ll take Baddest Behavior‘s vocal-centric pre-chorus and brief, brassy interlude. Everything else can go right to the scrap heap. Its cacophonous instrumental already sounds like it belongs there.

  1. Honestly, I’m just… too used to this kinda trope that it doesn’t faze me anymore. Just “another generic shouty song with a few vocal standouts”. Kinda wish the song was like the pre-chorus and chorus (though the “baddest behaviour” repetition will get stale fs). Ratings is just.

Hopefully they release a “Dangerous” 2.0 cause it was one of my most played songs last year

  2. This is not as bad as I thought it would be? At least the chorus is mostly melodic and non-chanty! I’m a little confused by the first part of the chorus that brings the momentum to an absolute halt. The dance break is probably the best part of the song for me. Also hoping for another Can’t Stop Shining from these guys.

    • I felt similarly about the first part of the chorus. I was happier when I started to think of it as a second prechorus. Still doesn’t quite solve it because the actual prechorus is my favorite part of the song and builds so nicely just to screech to a halt. But it did help!

  3. There was a time a year or three ago that I would try find what is good about a song like this, the shouty dark theme boy band song everyone has on or three of in their catalog. At this point, I mean, its just another one. OK, the break is interesting, a bit.

In a related note, my daughter’s usual morning croissant, this week from a different store, was bready but nicely buttery. So about the same.

  4. Could’ve been worse, but I’m not sure I’ve listened any Tempest prior to this song, so my expectations going in were non-existent. Melodic parts were great. Not so big on the rap parts, which is par for the course for me. Really need to listen to Can’t Stop Shining one of these days.
