Song Review: Xikers – We Don’t Stop

Xikers - We Don't StopIt took me some time to come around to xikers’ sound, but their second mini album — and particularly the raucous energy of title track Do Or Die — made me a convert. As with any group debuting in the shadow of an ultra-famous agency senior, they’re at their best when blazing their own musical path.

New title track We Don’t Stop maintains the punky, rap-rock style of previous releases, but it’s not as focused as it should be. In fact, it’s the type of song that gets less interesting as it goes on. The opening verse, delivered with fiery speed and character, is a total blast. The guys are practically fused with the beat, nimbly parkouring their way through its guitar-assisted assault. It’s extremely funky and had me thrilled for what might come next.

Unfortunately, We Don’t Stop loses much of this momentum with a so-so chorus and a second verse colored with effects-heavy production that doesn’t pack the same punch. A ferocious bridge rekindles some of this energy, but those heavy-handed vocal effects strike again to rob the guys of their natural character. The song concludes with a 90’s hip-hop breakdown that feels pulled from a different song entirely. In short, We Don’t Stop is all over the place. This grab bag approach can be exciting and unpredictable, but not when some of the elements are so much stronger than others. Still, even though the structure isn’t working for me there are plenty of cool textures driving this track.

  1. I have loved them since their very debut track, and a few weeks ago I happened to see them live in Milan and I have to say they’re definitely more talented and energetic than most (and more popular) rookie groups.

I don’t know if I’m completely into this 90s hip-hop turn – maybe because I’ve never been into 90s hip-hop at all – but, as we said in other circumstances, nowadays what sounds vintage sounds fresh and being the new Beastie Boys could be a good plot twist for their artistic path.

In these terms, the whole ep is their worst to my ears (I pretty appreciate Supercalifragilistic despite it’s not exactly my cup of tea), but it’s quite easy to forecast it’s going to be their best seller so far.

    • Supercalifragilistic is definitely the highlight of the album, I love me some club beats! Definitely in mid-to-high 8s for me. The rest are just “ehh” to awful (*ahem* Red Sun)

  2. honestly something about this song (probably their vocal tones) really annoys me, so i’d probably put it a point lower

  3. Well, the instrumental slaps! I like it, but idk about the hooks though 😐

I’d give it a 8 as well, but hooks are a one point lower and production a point higher (7, 9, 8, 8)

  4. Also, I listened to the rest of the album and, here are my opinions on the songs cause I’m bored 🙃

Red Sun is basically a milder version of Koong (both a compliment and an insult), but istg it’s sounds like a 6ix9ine song, 5.5 for me (I hope they don’t release a performance video, but I better not jinx it then)

Supercalifragilistic goes HARD. The beat is amazing, in mid-to-high 8s for me (definitely the buried treasure of the album). May sound biased cause I love me some club bangers but idc 🤭

Every Flavour Jelly is mid. Nothing to say about it. 7 for me.

Break a Leg is cute, like a mild anime OST? But I like it, low-8s for me.

So yeah, the album is okay-ish. Supercalifragilistic and Break a Leg are definitely the highlights of the album.

  5. Fun and full and full of fun.

Xikers deliver exactly what I expect of them. This will never be my soty but I’ll be damned if it doesn’t put a smile on my face :)))

    8 seems about right.

  6. There’s something about Xikers energy and passion that is really positive and optimistic and kind of ‘seize the day’.

I’m quite sure I’m not their target market, but goodness I love Xikers.

  7. I actully like a few of their songs but this is my least favorite title track. They’re talented “rappers” but I’m just not a fan of the first kid’s tone/voice. This song sounded like Ateez meets Stray Kids and not in a good way. There’s way too much going on in this song and it just became less and less interesting as it continued.

Rap and Rock are genres that can sound good and cohesive when mixed together well and this was just not it. As someone mentioned before, Beastie Boys did that extremely well. Even Linkin Park, Rage Against the Machine, and i’ll include Limp Bizket mixed both genres in an interesting way.

  8. I’m glad I stan Xikers. I became roady since February 5th 2024. Homeboy got me into Xikers now Xikers is my boys and my ultimate bias. We Don’t Stop gave me so much energy. I love the instrumental and the MV. I don’t have a favorite part I love all of them. The ending is on fire. Xikers went from rockstar to hip hop. I didn’t listen to their new bside yet but I’ll listen to it tomorrow. Stream We Don’t Stop stan talent stan Xikers.
