K-Pop Risers & Fallers: April 2024

Risers & FallersRather than contain my “Risers and Fallers” feature to a single post in June, I’m going to share a bite-sized version at the end of each month. This will let me account for more songs and make a nice lead-in to the monthly round-up post.

I anticipate most of these ratings adjustments will be negligible: a 0.5 shift here, a 0.25 shift there. But, it’s a fun way to keep track of how my feelings on songs have changed over time – as well as which tracks currently have momentum on my playlist.

And remember, just because a song is marked as a “faller” doesn’t mean I hate it! Falling from a “9” to an “8.75” is no shame. 9+ rated songs occupy a totally different playlist in my music library, so I’m pretty particular about what qualifies. It’s a high bar.

This month’s feature covers the period from March 19th to April 22nd.

  1. Yippee! Fuego rose for you! The beat is too good there (though wish the hooks were stronger 😅) And another yippee! EPEX became a riser too! I really hope they continue this sound 🫶

I’m quite surprised that Broken Heart’s rose a LOT for you. I was expecting a 0.25 jump or smth seeing them mentioned in your hashtags. But the song’s alright, the distorted “Broken Heart” post-chorus is pretty cool though. In low/mid-7s for me.

Well, personally, I don’t have a riser or faller, since I don’t have too strong opinions on music unless it’s from a group I follow/stan/whatever. But maybe Youth2Youth? 8.5 to 8.75 for me as well.

  3. Oh, and btw, I’m curious now (sorry, I tend to be a bit too curious for my own good 😅). When a song rises/falls for you, which part of your criteria for the ratings system is most likely to be affected? Like, do the hooks or production happen to grow on you? Or does the song seem to age better (longevity) or you just happen to like it with time passing by (bias)? And also, will you ever include the updated ratings for a song like, the whole thing including mentioning the hooks, production, longevity and bias (or example, a song rising from a straight 8– 8, 8, 8, 8– to 8.5– say, 8, 9, 9, 8). Idk if this makes sense but yeah, or maybe mention which parts grew/aged bad for you (like hooks or/and bias for example) 😅

    • Ooh, that’s a hard one to answer because it varies depending on the song. I’d say it’s rarely “bias,” as that’s kind of locked in from the beginning. It’s usually something about the melody or production that catches my ear over time. For example, the AMPERS&ONE song rose because I found myself enjoying the beat more and more each time I heard it (but I still hate the chorus). The TXT song fell because the production became more disappointing the more I heard it. The melodies in the DRIPPIN song caused it to jump as it got stuck in my head over time. I guess it could all be classified under “longevity” because these aspects take some time to reveal themselves, but it really does depend on the song.

Not planning to update individual aspects of the scores at this point, but never say never I guess!

  4. Gotta say, Broken heart to me is..unbearable pretty much. But recently I found last year’s Sweet & Sour, also Ampers&One song, and I’ve been playing that one non-stop. It’s quite criminal to me how hidden that song seemed when I first found it.

Earth, Wind & Fire now I like better because of their live performances, that high pitched sped up part becomes way less annoying when the boys sing it live and in a normal pitch.

  6. I listen to Unicode’s Let me Love quite a lot these days – even it’s not dramatic or so, this song has longevity! I love how coherent it is compared to the recent songs…it is also such a mood lifter too.

  7. I sort of agree with Deja Vu falling. I like it, but it just doesn’t stick in my mind very well, which is unusual for a TXT title track for me regardless of how much I like it. It probably doesn’t help that there’s so many songs with that title so Ateez’s or Dreamcatcher’s Deja Vu comes to mind half the time I try to think of the song.

  8. Does it ever happen to you that even though you hate a song, it’s always on your tongue still, Sheesh has been that song for me. I do not like it at all, but for some reason I keep singing it. On the other hand, Earth, Wind and Fire has been a real riser for me, watching the live performances has really contributed to it.
