Song Review: Purple Kiss – BBB

Purple Kiss - BBBPurple Kiss have had a somewhat disjointed singles run so far, swerving from one sound to another in shifts that can often feel drastic. My most played song (Autopilot) isn’t a title track at all. I’d love to hear that kind of synth-powered melodic showcase promoted with videos and performances. Instead, we have the trendy, catchphrase chorus of BBB.

BBB is a song in distinct pieces, which has become emblematic of this particular songwriting style. We’ve got the rhythmic melodies of the verses, where Purple Kiss get to flex their skill over a sturdy electro-meets-handclap beat that gives them plenty to chew on. Then, the pre-chorus offers a volley of ascending vocal lines that recalls agency seniors Mamamoo. It’s here that Purple Kiss sound the most at home.

These two segments do a nice job building anticipation for a chorus… if only we had a chorus. Instead, BBB opts for a spoken-word chant, monotonous in structure and uninteresting in delivery. There’s a way to make this style of hook stick, but K-pop has struggled to find innovative methods to position their spoken, catchphrase hooks. Instead of brash and exciting, this centerpiece sucks all the life from BBB. The song could be so much more, but the producers are too intent on telling us about “bad behavior” that they forgot to show us through the music.

  1. man, I REALLY loved the melody on the pre-chorus and the bridge why didnt they follow it up with something that actually complimented that sound. Also wtf is “bad taste, best yum, like caviar”😐

  2. It was all good until the chorus hit, the chorus hit, the chorus hit.

Autopilot is also my second most-played of theirs, somuchso it ranked high on my year-end list. I have their “Zombie” from 2021 on top.

    • Naw, I’d get sick of it quickly. I just want strong melodies and unique perspective. It just so happens that synth pop seems to be K-pop’s go-to genre for melodic songs these days.

  3. Hm. After the first teasers I was hoping for something like memeM, but it looks like we got monotonic sing talk instead. The pre-chorus has potential and it’s what I like the most about the song, but the chorus unfortunately doesn’t keep up with it. I feel like they generally executed this type of song well, but it’s simply not what I vibe with. Now, I hope the B-sides are better for me.

  4. That chorus reminds me of what IVE tried to do Baddie, drifting away from their usual sound to go for an out of place hip-hopish chorus which I see a lot these days, but it’s not their thing.

  5. I liked this a lot. Another good title from them. You had me thinking it was like some kind of Super Lady mess or some such. Of course, IMO, Bitter Sweet is the better song and should have been the title, but I’m still not mad.

  6. I didn’t hate it the first time I listened to it, but the endless bad behaviour chant chorus gets worse with every listen. I really like basically every other part of the song. This could have been really good somewhat rearranged and with a chorus that isn’t… that. And to top it off, it doesn’t really feel like their signature style either. Their past title tracks (sans 7Heaven) felt like they followed a general theme of variously dark and quirky, while this just doesn’t have much of a personality at all
