Yesterday’s Supernova was a fantastic return for aespa and hopes are high that their upcoming title track Armageddon will be even better. Between these two behemoths, the group has unveiled a surprise music video for album b-side Long Chat (#♥). You really have to see this video to believe it. If my review focused on the visual element of K-pop, I’d have plenty to say about our new friend Corn-On-The-Cob oppa.
Alas, I must focus on the music alone. Long Chat is a mid-album b-side, so expectations must be set accordingly. Even so, the track plays very much like filler. Its mid-tempo bounce is amiable and light, but underpins a song that doesn’t have all that much going on. I’m more intrigued by the synth textures, which inject a welcome ruggedness to the otherwise sugary sweet tone. The gurgling electronics that frame verse one are particularly addictive and make me wish the track would have pushed further down this experimental lane.
Instead, Long Chat delivers a catchy sing-along — easy and breezy and just a bit childlike in execution. I’m not sure if the final album version will be longer than the video edit, but at just over two minutes this Long Chat is quite short — more like an enjoyable interlude than full-on album stunner.

SM groups have been doing what they call ‘track videos’ instead of MVs, and they are usually shorter than the actual song! They usually cut out the second verse and just skip straight to the bridge. I also loved the weird synth in that first verse and hope we hear more of it in the full song!

Yeah I wasn’t sure if this was a track video or not since it wasn’t labeled as such. I guess we’ll find out if/when the released song is longer.

Thus starts the BBKK movement in contemporary times. Thank you, aespa.
Bring Back Kpop Kitsch!
Actual Kitsch, not the song Kitsch which wasn’t Kitsch. I want the whole Kitchen Sink in my Kitsch. I want the OT OC in my YT!

I’ve been enjoying these mini-MVs they’ve been doing for their songs this rollout. The one for this was cute, but the one for today’s Licorice really caught my eye (mainly cus I like mint chocolate chip lol)
Will you be covering any of these remaining mini-MV songs on the blog or leaving them as potential buried treasures once the full album drops? Licorice has a rock bent to it I found really interesting, and the overall song variety they’ve showcased so far already has me hooked.

I think it’s just going to depend on the song edit. I’m not sure we got enough of Licorice for me dive into a review, whereas I almost thought Long Chat was the full song because it felt pretty complete (if short…).

I was too engrossed in the MV, I had to go again to properly listen to the song. The videos are really fun this time around. And yep, the song has all the qualities of a filler B-side, nothing special going on here. But I am here for the new trend of Kpop groups promoting multiple songs from their albums – Aespa, IVE, RIIZE, Boynextdoor have all gone for it. Alas, those guys will be overworked for sure.
