Song Review: Weki Meki – CoinciDestiny

Weki Meki - CoinciDestinyIt’s been a rough couple of weeks for fans of underrated girl groups. We’ve seen the departure of members and even the disbandment of long-standing acts. The latest to suffer this fate is Fantagio Entertainment’s Weki Meki. The girls debuted in 2017 but have essentially been inactive for the last two years. Now, instead of a long-awaited comeback, new single CoinciDestiny acts as their swan song.

While I’m pleased to see Weki Meki given the dignity of a proper farewell track, the move still stings and makes it clear Fantagio had long since lost interest in backing them. CoinciDestiny feels more like an obligation than a grand finale, but at least it’s not some drippy ballad. The tempo is bright and sprightly throughout, echoing the group’s upbeat discography. “CoinciDestiny” is a clever compound word, even if it makes for an odd centerpiece for a pop song.

The song’s wistful sentiment strikes an appropriate tone for this occasion, but like many disbandment singles it’s more functional than purely enjoyable. You can hear (and see) the shoestring budget that constrained this track, making the overall experience pale in comparison to their biggest and best comebacks. I don’t know when I would choose to listen to this over career highlights like Tiki Taka or Cool. With this in mind, I can’t justify giving CoinciDestiny a high rating. However, please don’t misconstrue a so-so review as representative of Weki Meki’s entire discography or career.

      • I like tumbler it’s a very easy listen but I’m confident you won’t really like it and the b side welcome to my world is pretty good too so you may like it. Overall very summery but no where near a brave brothers summer banger

  2. I think “objectively” (whatever the hell that means) “Tiki Taka” and “Cool” are indeed their best titles but I have a soft spot for “Crush.” Even despite that meh second verse. Kinda sad to see them go out like this, Doyeon had such huge it girl potential but Fantagio wasted them.

  3. The way these companies fumbled the bag on post-I.O.I careers should be studied. I was not particularly into I.O.I, but with the amount of hype that show got, I thought at least some of the resulting girl groups would be in top five of their era. Instead we had groups rushing to debut their groups in the middle of I.O.I promotions, burying the popular members in groups that were way too big, making some questionable song decisions, and, in the case of Pristin, disbanding quickly. Props to Weki Meki for sticking it out so long, but Fantagio should feel embarrassed at how they knocked the rising stars of Doyeon and Yoojung off course.

  4. This is just sad, to see a group with so much talent and a distinctive style given this blah sendoff. How can Weki Meki close out their career on an MV with no choreography?? I’m sure all the members have known for years that it was just a matter of time. What a waste.

  5. Beautiful song, I’m also glad they got a bright song instead of some sad ballad for this, even if the occasion is rather sad. Fantagio wasted a lot of potential with them, and I’m still mad about that.

But instead I’ll be thankful for the wonderful discography they’ve given us. I really liked their last EP (especially Siesta, Luminous, One Day), and career highlights like Tiki Taka, Cool and Crush definitely deserve to be remembered for a long time.

Hopefully they’ll have more luck on their future path.

  6. This is wild bc I remember Nick being pretty harsh on WM for pretty much every song. It’s nice to see more people coming around to how great their discography is, even if it’s too late for more.

  7. Seeing Elly on Queendom puzzle I assumed it was a start to a resurgence. Sucks to know it wasn’t leading to anything at all. Wekimeki released some good songs over their career, with their first three EPs being among my favorites in kpop. I don’t know what has to change to prevent this from happening. It’s almost like companies have no money to saved up in the case of less favorable sales. Frankly I think fantagio expected Yoojung and Doyeon’s popularity from i.o.i to be what brings them success

  8. people constantly talk about the ioi curse, but that’s just an euphemism for “most of the girls were under incompetent companies”. i understand survival show hype was a new concept back then, but that could never justify how badly fantagio failed weki meki.

the song is fine, it just feels odd coming from a group that created (or at least popularized) teen crush.
