Song Review: Super Junior-D&E – You&Me

Super Junior-D&E - You&MeSM Entertainment is having a busy Monday, with no less than three comebacks across both the Korean and Japanese market. Super Junior’s Donghae and Eunhyuk join Red Velvet and NCT Wish in celebrating new music with the release of Japanese single You&Me. And like many acts this month, they’ve opted for a bright, funky summertime sound.

During their peak era, Super Junior-D&E released some of my favorite music in all of Super Junior’s discography. Much of that music landed in Japan, with the duo’s 2014 Ride Me album a particular highlight. It’s been awhile since a D&E track has captured me in the same way. You&Me won’t go down as one of their best, but its buoyant soundscape is quite pleasant.

The song kicks off with its strongest moments as gurgling synth underpins a sprightly verse perfectly suited to the season. The chorus is similarly upbeat, offering an easy pop melody over bounding production. Things become a bit murkier from here. You&Me descends into the awful ‘slowed-down-second-verse trend that won’t die,’ and this dulls some of its energy. The moment is short-lived and before we know it the track is pulsing on goodwill yet again. It may never take any surprising or inventive turns, but You&Me will make a fine addition to this year’s summer playlist.

  1. Not to quibble but I thought D&E had left SM recently, in that latest round of contract negotiations? Anyway, I completely missed that they were having a comeback, so this was a pleasant surprise! Definitely not the strongest release today, and the others were pretty fantastic, but it’s always nice to see D&E in the mix.

  2. Hah! The song is in such a major key that it is hard not to smile and think that the song is a soda commercial at the same time.

But seriously, yes, its a great pop song. And solidly delivered too, not phoned in. There are moments, but on balance its high 8’s for me, for bias. As with other D&E songs. this one is co-written by Donghae.

(also noting that technically D&E have left SM and are on their own label. Kyuhyun also left SM and is under Yoo Hee-yeol’s label.)
