Song Review: ALL(H)OURS – Shock

ALL(H)OURS - ShockI wasn’t bowled over by ALL(H)OURS’ debut earlier this year, but I sensed musical ambition that might lead to exciting things in the future. With their second mini album, the guys are moving in the right direction. Title track Shock (도깨비) takes many familiar boy group tropes but adds a crackling instrumental that feels new and exciting.

There are hype tracks and there are ‘crank the gas pedal and barrel straight through a brick wall’ *hype* tracks. Shock belongs in this category, unveiling a larger-than-life energy that never lets up. From the first moment, it feels like we’ve been thrown into a cage match. The instrumental bats us around for three minutes, eschewing the usual pots-and-pans percussion for more resonant electro textures and a chugging post-chorus that unfolds with trance-like energy. At its peak, this production is thrilling and fresh, exploring electronic influences K-pop rarely touches.

With production this exciting, it would be wonderful to hear an equally engaging song attached to the bombast. Shock is more chant-shouting than I’d like, but if you know what you’re in for it’s still a lot of fun. Melody pokes through during the verses, and the chorus has enough heft to get your adrenaline pumping. The song may not be perfect, but I respect how bold it is. ALL(H)OURS certainly have my attention.

  1. Oh damn, a shouty hype song that got me hyped for once! ٩( ᐛ )و I also got that urge to scream “AAAYYYY, DOKKAEBI 👹”, but ofc, I can’t let the neighbourhood think of me as some crazy kid

Anyways, the production reminds me of Supernova but on some sort of steroids and a lot more bombastic. This is the maximalism I was missing in K-Pop and it’s here now! :’D It could do with a better chorus, but the shouty hooks also really compliment the instrumental, and the “Ayyy, 도깨비/dokkabi” part also sounds almost anthemic (at least to me).

Rating’s the same (though I’m also dabbling into the 9- 8, 10, 9, 9- category as well). Will prolly age well, given it’s been playing on loop for hours now and I’m not getting any tired of it!

  2. i probably was of the select few that loved their debut, and when previewing the teasers of this song; I was excited to see that they kept the same sound from their debut.

Overall I would give this song 9’s all around as it’s like a big rush of adrenaline followed with chanting!!!

  4. Mmmhhh I’m sorry but I really couldn’t stomach this one. It sounds like the Eurovision version of ATEEZ to me. I know I’m in the minority here, maybe it will grow on me, but first listen I couldn’t go past the chorus 😦

  5. This doesn’t sound that different from an Ateez or Stray Kids song. Since I like their style I like this as well.

  6. My heart is saying yes, but my head is saying no.

I mean, its a pastiche of other shouty noisy songs, but it is here and now and somehow good to hear. They set the energy button right at a pip above 10, and that is good.
