Song Review: Weeekly – Lights On

Weeekly - Lights OnWeeekly went through some growing pains, but have largely stuck to a bright, upbeat concept. Now in their fourth year, the group tackles a K-pop right of passage: the summer-themed comeback. Lights On bounds forward with plenty of energy, even as it struggles to distinguish itself within a sea of similar summer efforts.

The song checks off many of the right boxes. Exuberant, brassy synths frame a propulsive beat. The vocal hooks volley back and forth, stacked on top of each other to craft a sonic playground. The “oh my, oh my” segments do an especially nice job capturing a euphoric summer sound and Weeekly’s effusive energy adds constant fuel to the track.

Yet with so much going on, Lights On lacks an undeniable centerpiece. The melodies have plenty of movement, constantly spinning round like a carnival ride. This helps to counter the track’s lack of a killer calling card, painting a hectic intensity that will keep you engaged for its entire three minutes. For now, in the vast pantheon of summer hits this feels mid-tier. I’m certainly happy to have it, even if the song could be so much more.

  1. Candy floss with an extra generous side of helium.

OK, here I go again, talking about speed. It is too fast. They might be able to keep up with the choreo, but there is no space to breathe to actually try to sing it live, ever. 0.9x makes it sound like an old school Twice song, in a good way.

  2. I would say they had this “rite of passage” quite a while ago— “Holiday Party” back in 2021 when they were still bright-eyed bushy-tailed rookies, an August summer comeback… and at first listen i prefer that song to this. But i have intense bias towards early Weeekly with Jiyoon, i realize that. And “Holiday Party” actually took a while to grow on me, so we’ll see how i end up feeling about this one.

  3. I love their energy here, but they could have edited more. The bridge could be cut in half, ending at Jihan’s (the blonde’s) high note and right back into the chorus.

Also, I don’t know if I needed them saying “Lights On” 18 times. I feel a tad hit over the head with it. Still, a fun comeback for them, I’m not mad at it.
