Song Review: DKB – Flirting X

DKB - Flirting XA Brave Brothers produced boy group should be guaranteed catnip for my personal taste, but I’ve had a hard time maintaining interest in DKB’s music. They’ve released some decent singles, but for every highlight there’s another head-scratcher. New track Flirting X offers a sonic makeover, painting them as angsty rock stars.

This is a welcome shift, especially when the rock elements are tied to classic Brave Brothers hallmarks. I’m not sure I’d call the song “upbeat,” but it swirls with the melodic focus and building drama that made tracks like Brave Girls’ After We Ride so satisfying. Flirting X lacks the knockout hooks of that highlight, but succeeds in delivering a moody, synth-kissed showcase that blends past influences with present trends.

Flirting X has a somewhat fitful arrangement, never going full tilt into a four-on-the-floor dance tempo for too long. However, these ebbs and flows add a sense of tension that keeps the song compelling. Its strongest moment lands during the explosive post-chorus where synth meets guitar meets vocal ad-libs in a revelatory burst. This energy continues into the finale, which could (and should!) have been extended by at least thirty seconds. Flirting X deserves maximum payoff to match its snowballing momentum. But even without that extra push, this is the most excited I’ve been about a new DKB single.

  1. After seeing them on Peak Time, I’m a little baffled by most of their choice of singles. Their strength that they really showcased on that show and which made them stand out was their energetic performance, but most of their singles have a very moody vibe to them. I’m glad they’re not doing random shout-y EDM the way boy group tracks can tend to quickly devolve into, but it is surprising to me that they themselves don’t really seem to lean into the kind of songs that they performed well on Peak Time with.

This one also doesn’t have any dancing in the MV, I wonder if there’s choreo? Harry-June and Junseo especially are such incredibly talented dancers, so I hope they get a chance to showcase all of that more.

All that said, I agree that this is one of their better title tracks! Completely agree that the final chorus and post-chorus should have been extended, but otherwise this is definitely very intriguing and I feel they do pull this sound off quite well.

  2. I was curious how this would sound since they lost on of their main vocals but i’m impressed. This is probably the most i’ve heard Harry June sing and it sounded pretty good.

I enjoy DKBs music becsuse they’re full of energy buy I appreciate how they can do calmer and more chill songs. I like this sound on them but agree that their output can be very hit or miss. I think Sorry Mama was one of my favorite debuts in 2020 but their last releases just weren’t it. I’m excited to listen to the mini album.

It’s so good though…rooting for them. Their PeakTime performances were memorable to me. 8.5/10
