Song Review: Kara – I Do I Do

Kara - I Do I DoKara are one a few second-gen groups to make a long-awaited return these past few years. If I’ve learned anything from these comebacks, it’s that nostalgia can lead to unrealistic expectations. The chances of a group returning to their musical peak (or launching a new peak era) are usually pretty slim. For most fans, it’s enough that the idols simply exist and acknowledge their legacy.

I Do I Do follows 2022’s When I Move, a decent — but somewhat generic — song that ultimately felt like a missed opportunity. This time, the ladies have opted for a subdued summer sound, delivering both Korean and Japanese versions of the single. This sound shares little connective tissue with their stellar run of Sweetune-produced singles, but its breezy nonchalance suits the season well. I’m not sure how much input Kara themselves had in the song selection, but I’m not sure the A&R team at RBW understand what made them such a beloved group in the first place.

To I Do I Do‘s credit, the song expands and improves as it goes on. What opens as a sleepy affair (think late-era Apink or GFriend at their most beige) slowly gains steam until we reach a rich, guitar-laced finale that sends us out on a high. Kara’s performance is impeccable throughout, elevating I Do I Do at every turn. Combined with the goodwill earned throughout seventeen years in the industry, this makes for polished, tasteful comeback.

  1. A few of kara’s earlier songs had this vibe, but it is definitely giving more a pink than kara. I think the girls sound great, the from very beginning the vocal performance quality is so much better than the average group today. The melodies are good enough that this will probably get quite a few listens from me
