I don’t often review trot music, but new unit Atlantis Kitsune may be of interest to more casual K-pop fans. One of its members is Kim Sohee of disbanded girl group Nature. Nature’s most exciting material had a silly, trot-like energy at times, so the move makes sense. Atlantis Kitsune pairs her with Japanese singer Kanou Miyu and offers a good entry point for the genre.
Much of K-pop — particularly the first and second generation — is built upon trot melodies. Strip away some of the more specific production flourishes and Oh My! (어머나!) sounds kind of like an old T-ara single. Whatever your feel for the genre, it’s nice to hear the girls sing confidently throughout the entire track. Disco strings give the Oh My! an unexpected I Will Survive heft while electric guitar adds jolts of intensity. The melodies are familiar but satisfying and the arrangement keeps the energy buoyant throughout. There’s a limit to how often I reach for trot music on my playlist, but Oh My! is a strong example of the sound.

Off-topic but I’m curious to know your thoughts on these new songs/remixes that were released today:

Quick thoughts:
KATY: Better than WW, but pretty generic and could be much stronger.
ADDISON: I liked her EP, but find this boring. I’m just really sick of this brand of subdued, melodically flat pop music. It’s fine for what it is, I guess.
JADE: Love the original, didn’t really need this. The arrangement’s cool but it puts spotlight on some of the cringier lyrics that don’t work as well in this setting.
ENHYPEN: Brings nothing new to the original beyond making me think this was probably written for Ava Max originally before being passed on to ENHYPEN. (They sound awkward together, too).

Thanks for your quick thoughts! Yeah, I do agree with your thoughts although I did like the new dramatic arrangement of Jade’s song. And this was a big cue for me to check out ENHYPEN’s Brought The Heat Back (the original) which turned out to be great!
I apologize for the mass spam of more new songs/remixes in this post once again, but I would also love to hear your quick thoughts on these three songs that I’ve just come across (I think the Zedd one might be up your alley):
Man today was stacked with new releases (though the Guess remix was last week haha)
Also, I’m curious to know what’s your overall favorite Katy Perry song at the moment? She does have some bops in the past decade imo.

CHARLI/BILLIE: It’s fine. I’m not a huge fan of either of these artists in the way most people are and I think their music hinges on a love for their cult of personality, which I just don’t have. Charli’s album has grown on me, though.
SHAWN: Yawn.
ZEDD: Pretty generic. Needs a more unique vocal. I like the rhythmic effect of the chorus, though.

Oh forgot to answer the second part! When it comes to Katy Perry, the Teenage Dream era is pretty much the only one I return to. The title track is of course a standout but I have a soft spot for California Gurls too because it was such a great sound for that summer. Otherwise, I find her pretty unlikeable as an artist and often times problematic.

yeah as much as i love katy (after all she is a childhood favorite) shes definitely a product of her time and falls flat as an artist as we saw in the witness era, todd in the shadows did a great video on it
feel like this new era is her trying to appeal to the lowest common denominator millennial yt gays from west hollywood who scream “yasss queen” whenever they see a woman do anything

It’s a cover of a 2005 song by trot singer Jang Yoon Jeong (장윤정).

since Sohee is from Produce 101 and let’s walk down the memory lane that B1A4’s Sweet Girl turns 9 years old today…Wonder how this song may sound to you after a few days of a non-exciting August releases…https://youtu.be/5W7GSJ-4ZqQ?si=WG7oXCn-Pad-G7d7
not to mention Sohee was part of the team to sing Jinyoung’s song “In the Same Place” on Produce 101. https://youtu.be/_1NbzOE4HTQ?si=eKIa7h20N3U5-U3Z

Not my favorite B1A4 single but still a total bop and the mini album is excellent. Jinyoung knows his way around a melody and we just don’t get that kind of pop songcraft often in K-pop anymore…

I immediately thought of sunny hill when I played the song. Also jewelry’s one more time. This will be a pleasant track to have in my rotation
