Song Review: Mimiirose – The Flowers Swayed

Mimiirose - The Flowers SwayedGirl group Mimiirose continue their once a year comeback schedule, with The Flowers Swayed (흔들리지 않고 피는 꽃이 어딨어) their first new single since last September’s Flirting. The song sees them towing the line between sparkly synthpop and the more reserved girl group sound that’s been dominating 2024.

Choosing between these two influences, my taste (unsurprisingly) favors the synthpop side of things. The Flowers Swayed is at its best when leaning into its twinkling synth line, making me wish this element was even more prominent throughout. The track’s driving beat keeps things chugging along but often feels too murky and reserved to stand out. The same could be said about Flowers‘ melodies. They’re pleasant but rarely gripping, simply passing time as we wait for a knockout highlight that never comes. I’m reminded of last year’s Madeleine by the recently-rebranded Limelight — a song that mined much more from a similar sonic palette.

  1. Off-topic and I apologize for the spam of new music but I would be curious to know your quick thoughts on some of the other songs released today. I have a feeling half of the songs might be up your alley.

I really can’t wait for your global pop round up soon. So far, much of this month’s music has been stale on my end so I’m crossing my fingers that I find some gems from your picks!

    • Okay, I’ll bite. This month has been very barren for me too (across all music markets). It’s like music just decided to stop for a few weeks all over the world. It’s kind of depressing!

BENSON: I dislike this style of music, so it’s a big no for me. Don’t get the appeal. His voice is annoying.

BLESSED MADONNA/KYLIE: I like this. It’ll be on my round-up.

TINASHE: I wish I could get into Tinashe but I just don’t get it. This song is okay because it’s got some energy/bite. But overall the slow, languid pace of her music just isn’t for me… especially across an entire album.

      DEMI: Meh.

ISABEL: I don’t know this artist but this is okay. The breathy deliver gets a bit old, though. I wish artists would sing like their lives depended on it.

MEGHAN: How dare you post a Meghan Trainor song on this blog! Haha This is a big nothing for me.

      • Yeah haha. It’s like the Olympics happened and now the overall music quality dropped. I’m still disappointed by how the Lady Gaga and Bruno Mars duet turned out to be underwhelming for these two artists of their caliber and who haven’t dropped anything for a while (at least as solo artists).

On the bright side, Taemin’s new album will drop next Monday and the highlight medley seems promising 👀. I’m crossing my fingers that this turns August around.

(And I’ll remind myself to not send you Benson or Meghan songs again lmao. Sorry about that)

        • The new Lady Gaga x Bruno Mars sounds like old Style Council music – 80’s blue eyed jazz pop. Hubby plays them a lot on vinyl, and that is an understatement.

  2. I like it, it’s cute. It reminds me of the lovechild of STAYC and Seoul era H1-KEY. I do wish the synthpop influence was stronger though.

A straight 8 for me. I could give an 8.25 (8, 8, 9, 8), but I’d give it an 8 for now to be on the safer side.

P.S, now that the girls are under a new company, I hope we get more comebacks, this one-comeback-a-year schedule wouldn’t help them.
