Song Review: Young Posse – Ate That

Young Posse - Ate ThatRookies Young Posse have made a name for themselves with quirky hip-hop tracks and bizarre music videos with bad green screen effects. New single Ate That leans into both aspects but stands as their best attempt yet, embracing a full throated G-funk beat.

I have a huge soft spot for 90’s hip-hop, particularly when underlined by car-shaking grooves and funk-inspired synth. Ate That is clearly appropriative and seems to know it, and that’s been a problematic aspect of Young Posse’s music from the start. It requires some level of cultural blinders from its listeners. Removing that aspect from the conversation, Young Posse are at their best when acting goofy yet simultaneously taking the music itself quite seriously. Ate That strikes this balance, merging a silly counted hook to an extremely credible instrumental that injects a sense of fun back into K-hip-hop.

I can’t stress enough how much I love Ate That‘s production. In a market currently bogged down by subdued beats and two minute songs, it’s so refreshing to hear a track that feels like it’s actively trying. The song itself doesn’t offer many killer punches, but that almost doesn’t matter when the beat is so addicting and fully fleshed out. I’d love to hear Young Posse continue down this route, mining the best ideas from the past and injecting their own modern touch.

(Unfortunately, the audio in the official music video upload is very distorted, so I’m also embedding the album version for comparison)

  1. im still not a fan of young posse’s concept (guarantee if they go to some place like atlanta or miami they’d be begging to go back to their dorm rooms in seoul) but i really like this. granted there are way better songs in the same genre than this but its still enjoyable

  2. Absolutely love the beat, it’s reminiscent of BoA’s iconic ‘Girls on Top’ (one of my all-time favorites) and it clearly takes inspiration from GTA (both in sound and aesthetic, literally reminded me of the ‘Mission Passed sound, very playful, very fun) I enjoyed the quirky verses, but that chorus does nothing for me.

  3. I admit tit’s been hard to like this group and their “concept”, the girls are clearly talented but at times it came off as cultural appropriate-lite. They’re toeing the line but someone in their company is making sure they don’t go full appropriation. The title is a choice, like seriously “Ate that”? Off the title alone, I already had it in my head that this would annoy me just as much as their other 2 release.

But I have to give them credit with this (minus some of the lyrics), this song is kind of good. I grew up in the 90’s so Snoop, Dre, Warren G, etc. where always in heavy rotation so I really loved the instrumental. I’m glad to hear more vocals in this song because that had been one of my main gripes with their other releases, give us more vocals and less rap. Almost anybody can “rap” but can y’all sing?

The video is extremely creative and entertaining (as was XXL), the styling is cute and fits the concept of the song and video. Now, will I go back and listen to this, maybe, will I put it on a playlist, probably not, but I feel like they’re leaning in a better direction. Just lose some of the AAVE and I’m on board.

    • I think Young Posse isnt a vocal centered act, so if you want to find this aspect, maybe try another group. YP are mostly about rap so dont expect singing much. Not that they cant but that just isnt their way of music.

  4. I love the energy of the song. Still, I wish if there’s another chorus outro before the ending….

A solid 9/10 song in my list. Love it! (8/10/9/9)

  5. the cultural stuff turned me off from them from the start but the goofiness of this release a lot easy to enjoy. Is food just part of their brand now? The production is definitely 10/10

  6. “t’s so refreshing to hear a track”

and its sounds rehashed from 90’s gangsta rap. The member berries are getting to you
