Song Review: NCT Dream – Rains In Heaven

NCT Dream - Rains In HeavenI’m a little surprised NCT Dream haven’t released an international single until now (not counting their duet with HRVY). They’re consistently one of the best-selling NCT units and slot nicely into a radio-friendly pop template. Rains In Heaven fulfills this brief, casting an evocative synth soundscape.

Regardless of the song itself, it’s so satisfying to hear the group’s vocals prominently driving their music. There’s no silly “smoothie, smoothie” here, as the track chooses instead to focus on tight harmonies and layers of wistful, airy melodies. We’ve never heard Dream perform quite this way on a single, and Rains In Heaven proves they should do so more often. Haechan — in particular — is one of SM Entertainment’s sharpest vocal weapons. I wish he took an even greater role in driving Heaven‘s emotional charge.

But while this track feels like a comfortable hug, it misses the opportunity to push beyond and become something truly special. It captivates most strongly during its first half while its musical recipe is still fresh and notable. Four minutes of chill, blissed-out energy is nothing to scoff at, and Heaven‘s lush vocal texture goes a long way toward maintaining interest. However, I’d be thrilled to hear a weightier climax or sense of growth to warrant the track’s relatively long running time.

  1. SM gives DREAM such good English singles. no desperate-for-TikTok-virality songs like their Korean material/several k-pop acts.

Broken Melodies is better, but this one isn’t bad. it’s still sound complete and better written than most mainstream songs nowadays.

  2. I was actually surprised by how I enjoyed the song from the first listen , I was already singing along by the end of it . That intro hit differently by the second listen . This song was actually so comforting considering that a few hours before that I kinda broke down so this song was like a band aid to that .

Also I haven’t heard this kind of production in a while , so it took me back and reminded me of a lot western groups music that I grew up with so it was a pleasant feeling . They suit this sound so much !

  3. I though the track was a bit generic but I enjoyed their vocals (wish the song resonated with me like &Team’s Koegawari). Also, talking about Whiplash, man I wish would they release something like it again. I loved the charm of their earlier releases.

  4. I like the retro sounds here but feel like the last two notes in the chorus hint at something that could have been more interesting. Maybe they were playing it a bit safe since it’s an English single. My favorite NCT Dream song in this vein is still Best Friend Ever.

  5. I liked this a lot. This sound feels so right for them but it also has heart. This would be a good song to experience in concert(seeing them next month!)

    • Yes, I hate deleting comments but this just isn’t the appropriate venue for it and it gets so nasty so quickly. We’ll keep that on twitter, I guess…

(The funny thing is, I (probably naively) wasn’t trying to open any floodgates. I was just trying to capture the awkwardness of doing two very different things one after another. The mental whiplash was real!)
