Song Review: Seventeen – Eyes On You

Seventeen - Eyes On You*This was originally a “buried treasure” review, but now that we have an official mv, it’s been changed to a “song review” post. My rating hasn’t changed.

It’s been quite some time since a Seventeen album has captured me, and new release Spill The Feels (such a cheesy title) is unlikely to break that trend. I don’t see myself going back to it often, but there are a couple of tracks worth keeping. Rain is a funky — if underdeveloped — jam and Eyes On You opens the album with an engaging 90’s dance beat.

It’s rare to hear Seventeen tread this far into dance music, but HYBE seems to have an affection for this style. Eyes On You reminds me of TXT’s I’ll See You There Tomorrow, which just so happened to open their latest album. I don’t think this track is as memorable, but its glistening production is very sleek and fashionable. This sound has a tendency to feel a bit hollow and aloof if not given enough personality, and I would have expected Seventeen’s power vocalists to inject more character. Instead, vocal effects smooth over their individual quirks, making the track feel oddly generic. But in this context, that polished production style works. It’s not the best K-pop song I’ve ever heard, but with a few small changes this could have been a much more compelling title track than the overly safe Love, Money, Fame.

  1. this and I’ll See You There Tomorrow are both produced by Shift K3Y, I hope he keeps working with more k-pop groups, maybe on a title track.

that being said, I’m still team Rain but this is my second favorite.

    • Having been into Shift K3Y years ago, I can definitely hear his style now that it’s been pointed out! Also wouldn’t mind hearing his work on more k-pop songs.

  2. Man, k-pop has felt so low-key lately. Had hopes for Whiplash, but the preview left me unimpressed. The beat is incredibly catchy and lively, but what I suspect to be a spoken and non-substantive chorus might be the death of the song.

  3. For some reason, this sounds like a NewJeans-style song to me. Nothing against the ladies, but I think it’s a little simple and bland for a Seventeen song. Just some beats and xtra stuff sprinkled in between. I’m not saying it is a bad song, it’s just a sound I don’t care for. Their last couple of comebacks have left me feeling the same way🤷🏻‍♀️

PS: I thought October was going to be an exciting month of kpop releases with KoL, Itzy, Seventeen, etc…but imo it’s been really lacking so far. Maybe it’s my mood, who knows

  4. Mom shouting at clouds says, yes, so dull. Last weekend for a road trip, I charged up all my ipods (4 of them) including my oldest ipod which dates to 2014-2016 era. Big Bang MADE era. So many bangers. Every week a new banger. Its like a long marriage, re-finding what made you fall in love in the first place.

I am eagerly awaiting the next generation of kpop. Each generation, a couple of leading groups come in and just completely change the vibe to something new and awesome. I hope that we are in the cusp of that next one. In the meantime, pass.

    • Ah yes, old Big Bang.. though honestly I feel this way more about SHINee and EXO – I keep rediscovering their discographies every few years and Im always stunned by how well everything holds up.

It feels like music nowadays is going the way of clothing: quickly produced, meant to be used and discarded within a short time. I don’ t like it at all.

  5. This is also my second favorite on the album after Rain. I think this, Rain, and Love, Money, Fame, are all different degrees of easy listening, some more successful than others. I hope they choose this as their second promoted single because I think the performance will be fun.

    • idk about 2nd promoted single but there’s another mv upcoming and I’m 99% certain it’s going to be 1 TO 13, though I would love for it to be Eyes on you

  6. I knew I could trust our tastes to align on this song!

This is the only other song off this album that has made it to my playlist. I don’ t remember the others, and I actively, thoroughly dislike Water, which is rare for me when it comes to Seventeen. Overall, this album is another shrug for me. Though the sting of disappointment has long been blunted through years of releases that don’ t resonate with me, it still hurts a little.

    • I was excited to get another MV from Seventeen, but… I feel nothing. It suits the song, I suppose, good looking but very devoid of the cozy warmth and charm that I associate with Seventeen.

  7. I really liked TXT’s I’ll See You There Tomorrow (probably one of my faves from their last album) so I knew I would like this one based on the previews. I’m hooked on that “eyes on you, eyes on me” chorus. I think this type of song will become more memorable with a banger choreo and performance, so I put my faith on mr. Choi Youngjun or whoever they might work with for this song (if ever). Still hope it was the titletrack (maybe in an alternate universe lol) but guess not everything we wish in life can happen sadly.

  8. I love that damn whistle sample in the verses, Eve Psyche and the Bluebeard’s wife have it in their hook, it scratches the right part of my brain

  9. I’ve nothing against Seventeen. They have been making good music since their debut. It’s just that they are going by the trend. The song doesn’t have any scope to show vocal ability & now K-pop songs are made to just gain views or trend on tiktok. I like Rain & Candy from this album. Only comeback I absolutely loved in 2024 is “Pineapple Slice” by Baekhyun(EXO).
