K-Pop A-Z Review: GFriend – Fingertip

Fingertip (from The Awakening – 2017)

What I said then: “Right from the start, Fingertip establishes its unique transformation with the instrumental’s wah wah guitar riff. It’s the opening salvo that ushers in the group’s most high energy synth riff yet, expertly blending 70’s funk, 80’s synth pop and 90’s techno anime bombast. GFriend’s productions have always been impeccable, but Fingertip‘s really steals the show. It’s a dense whirlwind of sound, hitting the listener with hook after hook without stopping for a moment to breathe.” (read full review)

Updated thoughts: I’ve written about Fingertip a few times on the blog already so there’s not much I have to add. Suffice it to say, I adore this song. I loved it on first listen (a “9.5” rating is about as good as I give on the day of release) and it’s grown into a real legend from there. The arrangement has a scrappy energy that feels as if it’s laying everything on the line. The powerful synths, squealing guitar and gated percussion combine to forge an ultra-compelling brew with GFriend’s confident performance standing at the forefront. Fingertip paints them as absolute warriors and it’s one hell of a battle cry.

  1. it’s such a pity korea didn’t liked this song when they released it. I always saw fingertip as a transitioning song for more maturing sound on their career. Legendary song for sure

  2. Oh my goodness. FINGERTIP.

I had somehow completely forgotten about this song and seeing it on the blog just brought back all my memories. This was one of my favourite songs (and favourite MVs) for a long time after it came out. All these years later, it’ s still phenomenal. So happy to see it get a 10 score.

  3. It was one of my favorite GFRIEND’s song with Rought and Mago. I’m so angry against HYBE, they didn’t deserve to be disbanded. No HYBE’s girl group has so many great songs.

  4. I’ve been listening to this song a lot lately. I wasn’t super into them when it was released but iirc the reaction was kind of mixed, which is a shame because its one of their best and musically not that big of a shift from some of their earlier stuff like Navillera.

  5. There are parts of this song where I feel like the vocals aren’t quite strong enough to stand up against the instrumental; I feel like more layering of their voices for a fuller sound would send this song above and beyond. The instrumental is just unbeatable. It’s like the younger sister of Kara or Nine Muses’ best work.

  6. I’m one of the late Buddies. I found this song on Dingo’s Killing Voice.

My first impression of this song is that GFriend with their producers is a musical genius, they explore some genres and implement them into their own style. They are not only content with their safe zone or iconic genre like anime-ish soundtrack, but they also trying citypop in Three Cups, and 80s synth-pop like this song.

Some lines remind me to another songs, for example:

Eunha’s pre-chorus part is similar to: Katy Perry – The One That Got Away. But Eunha interpolates it with high notes in the end of her line.

And finally, other important lines reminds me of my childhood when playing GTA Vice City, it was an iconic 80s song – which GFriend use as a muse for this Fingertip song.

Chorus sounds like:Laura Branigan – Self Control, especially this (I live among the creatures of the night) part.

So, it’s a great song that can attract people from wide range of age, and good for nostalgia, without realizing it at the first time.
