Earlier this year, Moon Jongup reunited with three other ex-B.A.P members for “Bang & Jung & Yoo & Moon,” but he’s also been active as a soloist. New single Twist Ya follows last year’s slinky X.O.X, adding a healthy dose of synthwave to give the track extra flavor. Though it doesn’t break any new ground, this is a great direction for him.
More than anything, Twist Ya reminds me of something from20 or Hello Gloom might come up with. It’s decidedly old school, drawing upon 80’s influences with a more modern vibe. The track centers around an effective melody line, varying slightly between the verses and chorus. On the plus side, this lends Twist Ya a sleek sense of continuity. There’s a level of inertia felt as the song slip slides to its conclusion. On the other hand, this relative flatness dampens the amount of musical drama Jongup can wring from the track. How good would Twist Ya be with a contrasting melody that blows its range wide open during a post-chorus or bridge? That’s the kind of songwriting that transforms a vibe into an experience. Twist Ya works brilliantly as the former, but could definitely stand to push itself further.

it is a lil sad to see the way the usual commentators on this blog here snob anything BAP related lately.
On the song it is good. The melody could have been stronger still the song works.

Jongup could give more vocal intensity to this, especially in the hook ‘Twist ya twist ya’ and the final section, but this must be his singing technique.
Overall it’s a good song, the intensity of this synthwave reminds me of this year’s ‘Goin, Goin, Gone’: https://youtu.be/yYBb9fgJrj4?si=P5aT2s1xvjfzRVFX

This is another one in the list of ‘objectively solid, just not for me’ songs. I appreciate it but I don’t think I’ll listen to it more.
