K-Pop A-Z Review: GFriend – GRWM

K-Pop A-Z - GFriendOne song. Every day. Alphabetical order.

Keep up with GFriend’s A-Z reviews here!

GRWM (from Walpurgis Night – 2020)

What I said then: “GRWM isn’t quite as disco as the three tracks that precede it, but it offers a shot of adrenaline that fits GFriend well. It’s got that galloping electro beat I love so much, which acts as a springboard for a sprightly melody and galvanizing hook.” (read full review)

Updated thoughts: Yep, this is still very solid. The song does so much right, from its huge instrumental riffs to the acceleration during its chorus. GRWM unfolds like one gift after another, blitzing through its various segments without ever losing a step. It’s too bad this ended up being GFriend’s final album because GRWM points a way forward that’s new yet still draws upon the charms the group displayed during their debut era. After four years, I’m bumping this rating up a bit.

  1. unrelated but any thoughts on this song? its been the subject of a long search to find its origin and yesterday, they finally found the apparent source

its in pretty low quality since it was recorded off a tape from the 80s but the original artists are planning on a re-release in the future

      • it was apparently a demo recorded from a german radio station during the 80s onto a tape which was later digitized in the 2000s

the search started back in 2019 on reddit and it has apparently concluded

  3. the pre-chorus entrance here reminds me of the chorus entrance of TWICE’s ‘Rainbow’

I still have an 8.5 rating with this one

furthermore, speaking of songs that sound like GFRIEND, I can hear DreamNote’s ‘Bittersweet’ in GFRIEND’s voice

  4. I think Yuju’s voice is definitely a highlight for this specific song, either the power note in the end, or just right on the chorus. Yuju’s belting always bring so much power and strength to a song and I can instantly recognize: “Oh! It’s a GFriend song!”.
