LOL (from LOL – 2016)
Ah, the literal title track of GFriend’s first album. I always thought it would be funny if this had been a ballad given its title, but true to form LOL is a burst of K-pop joy. The spiral of synths that opens the song previews the ebullient chorus, but the verses slow for a light new jack swing beat that recalls early Apink or SNSD. I love the bright synth line that closes out each chorus, especially when punctuated by tough stabs of percussion. The contrast between airy and hard-hitting is handled very well, making this an irresistible b-side.
